Everything starts with a good title. For the longest time, I have been neglecting my titles.

I only want to tell my story, but what is a good story without an audience who reads your stories. It only serves one’s ego. I need to put in the work if I want to be a writer with an audience.

I came to know of these hacks while looking at some of the most read articles on Medium.com.

How To Write A Viral Blog Post

In the article above, I wrote some critical points on how to write a viral post. Here is another good read how Medium would like you to write a headline.

1. Write For Your Reader — Blog SEO

Never lose sight of the fact that you write for your readers. The reason your reader will read your story or blog post is it gives them value. Remember, readers spend their time, and that is why Medium frowns on clickbait titles.

Clickbait titles fail to deliver, and for Medium.com, it means disappointing paying readers. But your keyword must be in the beginning, middle, and at the end.

  1. Add your keyword to your title.
  2. Add your keyword in the first 100 words or a variation of it.
  3. Add your keyword in the last paragraph of your article.

2. Write for Google — Blog SEO

Here is the blog SEO hack. You can write a different Title for what Google sees, different from what your reader sees.

The SEO Title is used in place of your Title on search engine results pages, such as a Google search. SEO titles over 60 characters will be truncated. SEO titles between 40 and 50 characters with commonly searched words have the best click-through-rates.

The SEO Description is used in place of your Subtitle on search engine results pages. Good SEO descriptions utilize keywords, summarize the story and are between 140–156 characters long.

If you don’t write anything here, Google will parse your article and use its own description.

3. Write for the Medium Algorithm — Blog SEO

Change display title and Subtitle: By changing this, you are writing for the Medium algorithm. You have the chance to change what you want Medium to read as your Title and Subtitle. Again, you can add your keywords.

The Title and Subtitle are used on your publication homepage, in previews of your story on Medium and social media.
