Medium rewards this type of Person

My Earnings after my first month on Medium.

Art by Malkas

You did it!

The first month of the year is over and we’re both here.

Exciting!

I’ll share with you how much I earned this first month.

Plus who wins at Medium and who doesn’t.

So how much did I earn?

BIG MONEY.

I am rich now and can live happily ever after.

I’ll be sitting on a beach sipping out of a coconut tomorrow.

… Is what I would like to say.

The truth is a bit different.

But don’t take my word for it.

Take a look yourself!

My first Month on Medium.

(Ps: The weekly Sunday update for Road 2 10k is still coming as usual.)

While this is not enough to retire my parents yet.

It is still an acceptable amount for my first month on the platform.

During this month I connected with writers.

A lot of talented writers.

And I noticed a common theme around the most successful ones.

They all had character traits that the unsuccessful did not.

Here’s what made them stand out:

1. Own Voice

You'll understand this if you have been following a writer for a while.

Every piece of writing they publish has a distinct tone unique to them.

This is not the case with copy-paste writers.

Especially the ones using Chat-GPT (AI has its own voice, you know).

The copy-paste writers have not found their own voice.

They borrow the voice of other, more successful writers, with the hope of getting the same results as them.

This of course won’t work, because a copy can only be second at best.

Find your own voice.

2. Original Engagement

“I agree.”

“Good job.”

“Very nice.”

I get these comments way too frequently.

Now I don’t mind some engagement, but I noticed that there’s a big difference to how great writers respond on Medium.

They don’t just agree with your point.

They dissect your story.

They chew through your words.

And reply with a thoughtful comment or even critique.

Commenting is also a form of writing.

This is why you should write great comments.

Because commenting is a small-scale writing practice.

3. Relentless Consistency

This might be the most important one.

But have you noticed how often your favorite writers are active?

It’s usually every single day of the week.

This enables them to get the repetitions in.

The daily reps give them more data to look at.

And the data helps them improve the quality over time.

Consistency → Quality + Quantity

This is the end of the article.

But it’s not the end of the road.
