Medium Publications Accepting Self-Published Pieces

Here is what you need to know if you want more eyeballs on your work — Updated August 2023

I’d like to share with my fellow writers on Medium that there are numerous publications open to accepting self-published pieces.

When I joined Medium two and a half years ago, I self-published several pieces in my haste to get started on the platform.

I quickly realized that I would not get any eyeballs on my work as a new writer unless I published my pieces in a publication.

After researching the platform, I discovered that several publications would accept self-published work.

Date of Publication

Depending on the date you self-published your piece, your piece may appear further down the publication homepage and not at the top of the homepage.

Alternately, if it is a much older self-published piece, it may be archived entirely and may not show up on the publication’s home page at all.

If it is a small or new publication, it may still appear on their homepage if they do not get many submissions.

To Self-Publish or Go With a Publication

Once you are better established as a writer, you may not need to publish with a publication.

I am aware that numerous well-known writers on the platform prefer to self-publish, as they have more control over content and formatting.

Yet, others say it does not matter either way if they self-publish or submit to a publication.

I find that small to medium-sized publications work best for getting more views on our work since our pieces remain on the pub homepage longer.

Many of the smaller publications also have a very active fan base. It can be gratifying to have people interact with your stories. Our fellow writers and readers can provide feedback and a sense of community, not to mention that interacting with others is enjoyable.

When we submit to larger pubs, our work can get buried in a large volume of work. The larger pubs add fresh content quickly, and your piece can be pushed to the bottom of the homepage, in which case people are unlikely to read it.
