How to create and format a Medium publication’s Avatar

Appearance definitely matters when it comes to Medium publications. One of the often overlooked elements of a publication is the Publication avatar.

The publication avatar works like a user icon and appears in previews of your publication throughout Medium.

Below is an example of the Blogging Guide publication avatar:

Although it is probably not as important as the publication logo (since it is less prominently featured, especially on mobile devices), Medium does require a publication avatar to create a publication.

The main places that the publication avatar does appear is in:

Searches for publications

At the bottom of stories in a publication

Or, on the homepage or featured pages of your publication:

How to Upload Your Publication Avatar

Step 1. Click on the Homepage and Settings button under your publication’s main menu.

Step 2. Click on the information tab.

Step 3. Scroll down to Publication Avatar and click the change image button.
