Medium Partner Program and Followers
The rules have changed so know your rights
You may or may not be aware that the Medium Partner Program (MPP), how writers on Medium monetise their work, has changed its eligibility criteria.
Before you become too worried, the change is only effective for new accounts, but will apply to existing accounts after December 31st, 2021. After reviewing the new eligibility criteria and reading a few of the soon to be thousands of screeds on the new terms, there is only one rule change we feel needs to highlight.
The rule change in questions is that to be an eligible member of the MPP, you must have 100 followers.
That’s correct, one hundred followers. That’s not a hard task for someone who has been writing on Medium for a couple of months, but it isn’t easy if it’s your first day of writing on this platform. This means that you aren’t eligible to earn until you meet that threshold.
The call to action we at Microcosm would love you to take away from this change in terms is to support the writers on Medium. Follow all or some (even none) of these suggestions, and everybody wins.
- Follow them, if they are under or just over the threshold.
- Read their works.
- Clap for them — the full 50. No need to be stingy, it costs nothing to you except maybe three seconds.
- Highlight their texts, where they inspire you or delight you or inform you.
- Comment on their pieces. Compliment them. Disagree with them. Critique them (constructively)
If we build a community where there is a common goal of producing quality micro and flash fiction, then we believe we’ve succeeded.
