Summary

Medium's new content prioritization policy favors articles written from August 1st, prompting consideration of rewriting older content for increased visibility and engagement.

Abstract

Medium has implemented a policy that prioritizes the display of articles written from August 1st onwards, which has significant implications for content creators. This change means that older articles may not be as easily discoverable, leading to a discussion on whether it is beneficial to rewrite pre-August content. The decision to rewrite depends on various factors, including the article's relevance, readership, and the potential to enhance the quality with new information. While rewriting can lead to increased visibility, engagement, and earnings due to Medium's algorithm favoring newer content, it is also important to ensure that the rewritten article offers substantial new value to avoid redundancy for readers who may have already engaged with the original piece.

Opinions

  • The author acknowledges Medium's shift towards prioritizing recent content as a response to reader preferences for up-to-date information.
  • There is a mixed stance on whether to rewrite older content; it is suggested for articles with low readership or those that can benefit from new information, but not recommended for all past articles.
  • Rewriting is seen as an opportunity to improve the quality of an article, leveraging the writer's evolved skills and knowledge.
  • The author emphasizes the importance of making rewritten articles distinct from the originals to provide fresh perspectives and avoid plagiarism.
  • The new policy is recognized as a significant change that could affect a writer's visibility and earnings on the platform, necessitating a strategic approach to content creation and curation.

Hi! I was delving into my research to find what to write today, then I stumbled upon this discovery when I was trying to find articles by a specific author. I realized that I could only see stories written after August 1st.

Dear reader,

your visit rewards me.
Thank you kindly 🙏🏽

It seems like the platform has taken a bold step by giving priority to articles written from August 1st onwards. If you don’t believe me, search your own name or any writer’s name and you’ll only see stories published from this month on, and if they didn’t publish any, you’ll see their interactions(comments, claps, etc.) with fellow writers’ stories. Yeah, before, we could see articles written at any time. But now, only the ones from August 1st onwards are showing. They’re now prioritized, right? Showing the recent ones more prominently.

I believe, with the new MPP, they are focusing more on new content. People want the latest information, so Medium wants to give them that. They want fresh and up-to-date articles, which is why they’re giving priority to newer ones.

So, Should we rewrite the old ones(Pre-august)?

Yes and No or Maybe. Let me clarify. There are a bunch of writers out here with hundreds and thousands of stories published, so if they start rewriting all those stories, it’s gonna take months or even years and most of the followers already read it, so they not gonna give it the same ratio.

And on the other hand, we maybe should, if the stories haven’t been read by a lot of people — in fact, that’s what I do. And, the benefits are multiple:

More People Could See Your Work: Because Medium is highlighting newer articles, right? So, rewriting the ones might help them get seen by more people. This means more readers and higher earnings.

Adding New Information: Some topics change over time. If you rewrite an older story, you can include new and important information. This can make it more useful and interesting to readers.

Improved Quality: Over time, we often refine our skills and gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter. you can use these improved skills to make them even better.

But hold on;

Not all articles warrant rewriting. Think about whether it still makes sense today. If it does, a rewrite might be a good idea.

Although rewriting involves copying significant portions of the original content, you need to make sure your rewritten version is different enough and doesn’t copy other people’s work.

The Bottom Line

It seems like there is much to discover about this new MPP. We all are aware that the platform wants to stay current but these limited search results tell us how this change affects what readers see — Wow. There you have it, guys. I see you in the next one. Thank you for reading.
