Medium Just Completely Changed the Partner Program
Here’s how you can make hundreds of dollars with the new changes
Wow! Medium just revolutionized its partner program. By revolutionized, I mean it, Medium really made quite a lot of changes. These changes are pretty great too. They mean more money for writers in general across the platform.
In this article, I plan on sharing these changes, and how you can make money off of these changes. The first change I’ll be discussing is the new referral program. However, before I begin with explaining the referral program, I’d like to ask those of you who are not Medium members and are potentially looking to support me to take a look at my referral page: https://nick3.medium.com/membership.
What this means is that if you click my link and get the medium membership, I can make money off of it. This is a great way to support writers and help other writers earn money off of it. I promise to explain this one change further along with the many other changes, so without further delay, let’s get into it!
The New Medium Referral Program
The new Medium referral program was announced just hours ago and is another great way for writers to earn money from Medium. The referral program basically means what it’s called. The way it works is that every writer has been given a referral link or profile landing page with their referral link.

If someone uses your referral link or page to buy the medium membership, you can earn nearly half of what that new paying member paid! If a new member pays 5 dollars using your referral link, you’ll earn $2.27. If another new member pays 50 dollars using your referral link, you’ll earn $24.12 every year they pay or $2.01 per month!
If you refer 100 members for a month on Medium, you’ll earn $227, and if you refer 100 members for the year, you’ll earn $2412! Obviously, it’s quite hard to gain 100 referrals in one year, but it is possible, slowly. Even if you only refer 25 people, you can earn $600! Take a look at the table below for a clearer representation.

Strategies To Get More Referrals
To get more referrals on Medium, there are several things you can do…
- Promote your referral link on your other platforms. This is important and can be extremely useful. If you have a following on other platforms, invite your followers to Medium and use your referral link.
- Please your audience, make them happy, and satisfy them with your writing. The readers on Medium that you’ve given quality content to on Medium are much more likely to use your referral link to buy a membership.
- Engage with your audience. Engaging with your audience will yield many benefits in general, and not just specifically to referrals. Engaging with your audience will make them want to get the medium membership because of the relations they are making with you as a writer. If they’re already looking to get the medium membership, this will make them more likely to get it using your referral link.
Partner Program Eligibility
Medium also announced that it changed the eligibility requirements for the Medium partner program. If you are already earning from the partner program, you’re all good until at least the end of this year, however, there is an exception which you will find a bit later in this article.
First of all, to be eligible for the partner program, you must have 100 followers, be in one of the eligible countries, and have at least one story published. To sign up for the partner program as a new writer, use this link: https://medium.com/earn.
The second change they made, which is the exception I mentioned above is that you have to stay active to earn. If you want to continue to earn from the Medium partner program, you must continually publish. Not publishing for 6 months will result in possible destabilization of your monetization.
The third change they made is a minimum payout threshold. This is a ten-dollar threshold set by Medium so that writers who don’t meet the ten-dollar mark on their earnings in a given month will have their earnings roll over to the next month.
As we all know, Medium is constantly changing and is nowhere near done making its updates to the platform. I’m excited to see what else Medium has in store for us writers in the future.
