Medium Just Announced The Creator Fellowship Program For Writers
For the next 3 months, this program will be replacing the bonus incentive
This morning, I woke up to an email from the Medium Writer Support team, telling me about, or rather, inviting me to apply for this new Medium program called The Creator Fellowship program which will start in August and will run for the next 3 months.
I am assuming that this is the new program to the Medium Partner Program (MPP) that Ev said would be announced sometime in August which essentially will be replacing the writers’ bonus which they have been giving out since April.
Or maybe it isn’t seeing that it’s only the middle of July and I’m already receiving an invitation to apply for it.
Well, regardless of whether this is the new program on the MPP or not, this program will be replacing the bonus (of $500, $100, and $50) which started in April and set to end this month.
So, what exactly is this Creator Fellowship program which I have been invited to apply for?

Medium says that The Creator Fellowship offers creators a monthly minimum guarantee of earnings through the MPP from August through October. A minimum guarantee. Of course, there are clauses to fulfill to be guaranteed this minimum amount.
But before that, your application will have to be vetted through and only once you’ve been accepted into this program, will you be guaranteed the amount stipulated — again, providing you fulfill certain requirements.
Let’s get down to what this Creator Fellowship program really is.
How long does the Creator Fellowship last?
The program begins August 1st and ends October 31, 2021.
This explains why Medium has started sending out invites as they will also need time to vet through applications so that all the writers who are eligible to join are approved by August 1st.
What is the deadline to apply?
You need to meet the criteria to qualify for the program and apply by midnight, Pacific Daylight Time (UTC -7), July 25.
What do I need to do to qualify?
To be eligible for the program, you must:
- Be fully enrolled in the Medium Partner Program (MPP), including having a connected Stripe account and approved tax documents.
- Have at least 200 Followers on Medium.
- Have published at least 1 post on Medium within the 90-day period ahead of submitting your application.
If you don’t already meet those criteria, you have until July 25 to qualify. Publish your stories, and follow and engage with other writers on Medium to increase your follower count.
Sounds pretty straightforward, doesn’t it?
If I meet the eligibility criteria above, will I be admitted to the program?
Medium is only accepting a limited number of creators at this time. Medium will prioritize admission for creators who publish high-quality stories and demonstrate good platform behaviour as determined by Medium staff.
Additionally, they are looking for a range of voices writing on topics that they know resonate for Medium readers (i.e. culture, technology, relationships, well-being). Medium reserves the right not to admit any creators to the program.
Meaning that even if you do qualify and fulfil all the criteria, there is a chance you may not be accepted.
When will I know if I have been admitted to the program?
If you have been admitted to the program, you will be notified via email and receive a contract specifying your monthly minimum guarantee and other terms by the end of the first week of August.
You then have 3 days to accept or decline the terms in the contract.
Why wasn’t I admitted to the Creator Fellowship? Will I have another chance to apply?
You might not be admitted to the Creator Fellowship despite meeting the criteria for eligibility. For this program, they are taking on a limited number of creators, and using subjective criteria to determine admission, including quality of writing, diversity of writers, and mix of subject areas in the cohort as well as new writers and more established writers — they will also be looking for writers who regularly meet their distribution standards.
However, not receiving admission to the program should not be considered a judgment on your writing. If you weren’t admitted to this program, you can still write and grow your audience on Medium, and earn through Medium’s Partner Program. Stay tuned for announcements about future programs from Medium.
What happens once I have been admitted to the program?
Once you have signed the contract that Medium send you, you will be admitted to the program. You will see the minimum guarantee in your partner program dashboard for the months of August, September and October. And they will be in touch with some guidelines and best practices for getting the most out of the program.
What will be required of writers in the program?
If you are admitted to the Creator Fellowship, you agree to commit to publishing at least 4 posts per calendar month starting in August 2021 that meet Medium’s distribution standards. Only writers who meet this requirement will receive their minimum guarantee for the month.
If you aren’t able to post 4 times in a given month, anything you post that month will still earn money through Medium’s partner program, and you can still receive the minimum guarantee the following month by publishing 4 stories in that month.
All you need to do is to publish 4 stories a month — just 4. Pretty doable isn’t it?
How much money can I expect as a monthly minimum guarantee?
Monthly minimum guarantees will be determined for each writer depending on your history of Partner Program earnings and on the consistency and the quality of your writing as determined by Medium staff. The minimum guarantees will start at $200 a month.
Now, this is where it gets interesting. While it says that the minimum guarantees will start at $200 a month, it also means that it can be higher.
So, depending on your average earnings in previous months and how consistent you are with the quality of your writing, it could even be more. That’s pretty cool if you ask me.
What happens after the program ends in October?
Stay tuned for more announcements from Medium.
This seems to be a trend with Medium moving forward, that every 3 months or after every program, there’ll be new ones coming up. I guess in a way, it helps to keep writers on their toes and excited.
What happens if I’m accepted but decline?
They’ll be sad to not work with you, but you’ll be totally open to apply to other similar programs should they run more in the future.
You will be given the choice to accept or decline so that’s cool on Medium’s part, not forcing this on their writers.

Honestly, I’m pretty excited about this and I hope that my application is approved and accepted. Although I do earn more than $100 a month, it’s never been consistently high to the point that I will easily break into the 4-figure amount.
Being able to get a guaranteed amount of $200 a month is considered good enough for me and if that amount is even higher, that’ll be even more awesome.
Medium is definitely trying to keep their best writers on the platform by dishing out this program and at the same time, trying to entice potentially great writers from leaving.
That in my books is a pretty smart move.
So, let’s see how this Creator Fellowship program goes and IF I am accepted into it, I will definitely share my experience and thoughts on it. If I don’t, then it’s just to keep grinding and hope that I’ll be able to get into whatever other writer programs Medium creates after October.
