Medium Is Truly A Global Community

The thrill of changes from the existing pattern to the new.

I joined Medium in September 2020. I did not know what Medium was about. My son made me aware of Medium that I could think of joining it as therapy during the Covid pandemic so I would not feel very lonely at home.

The day I started and self-published I found a community. Immediately 15 people followed me and read my post. I did not know how the system operates but I found it friendly. I opened a WordPress account and failed as I did not know how to get people over to my site. It started with a few followers but my interest waned and I closed it and went back to Medium.

I evolved over time and learned so many things. I found that there was something called MPP and another called statistics that people referred to all the time.

I made a deeper analysis and found that MPP was something that I was not entitled to.

The reason was that I lived in India. If I was an Indian who lived in the USA I could be a member but if my residence showed India, I was not eligible. This was really sad. Stripe did not cover India and Medium had only 1 method of payment when PayPal, Google Pay and so many other methods of payment systems are available.

Several changes came about in the last almost three years but MPP countries were untouched and everyone was expectantly waiting for this change.

The time has come to celebrate that the waiting period is over as it has finally been extended to include India and other countries not covered by MPP.

Several changes are indicated such as Quality over quantity, the value of claps highlights, comments, followers, audience engagement, read ratios, payment systems, etc.

I would like to share the happiness and some comments and changes about Medium that are coming from the posts of writers that I read.

Greetings to everyone from India!

It was Vidya Sury, Collecting Smiles who brought the amazing news first in the Dancing Press Elephants group of writers that MPP has been extended to India. Indeed we are all very happy to receive this wonderful news and you can read it in Medium Says, ‘Welcome India!’.

Then I published a post by Susie Kearley Medium Partner Program Extended to Include More Countries. According to her analysis Claps, highlights follows and comments will also make a difference to the earnings of writers.

Purbita Chakraborty was excited about the changes in Medium being extended to other countries including about publishing of quality articles in place of quantity. You can read about her view in Finally, Medium Heard Us Who Can’t Churn Out Content Daily. She had been very concerned because she found it difficult to write every day and found that her views went down drastically if she did not write every day.

Rakshit Shah wrote that he had been wanting to be a part-time blogger to be able to write in his free time but could not do so although he tried his level best since 2017 and now he expressed his happiness in the post Launch of the Medium Partner Program in India.

Yana Bostongirl wrote extensively about the changes coming on Medium and how personal stories are going to be very important in the next phase.

Here is her post. You can read about the changes on Medium from August and how they will impact the writers:

Questions That I would like to understand:

Three questions every writer is pondering over and no one has answers to it yet. Everyone is waiting for more clarity.

🍕 People who already have many referrals and depend on them, what will be the outcome of doing away with it? Will it impact the existing referrals or will they be valid till the membership of the person who joined with someone’s link?

🍕🍕In the new quality system of Medium, will there be a preferred niche or length of an article? What will be the fate of the poets and artists? Will this new system spark creativity and people will be inspired to write something valuable?

🍕🍕🍕People residing in countries of MPP continued their address even though they had migrated back to their home countries. Now that Medium has opened the MPP in 12 more countries how will they shift their membership to these countries from their previous address?

I will leave the readers and writers to find out how it is going to impact them and whether they will be in a favorable or unfavorable position. Time will soon tell.
