Medium Has Spoken Concerning AI
Medium is still a place for human writing.

The team at Medium has been hard at work thinking of ways to improve the overall Medium experience.
On August 1st, Medium launched the new Medium Partner Program (MPP). Hopefully, these changes will benefit the Medium family in a big way.
They’re also talking about the elephant in the room, AI.
I know there are still a lot of questions out there about what Medium is doing and what they think. Well, they’ve let the cat out of the bag.
So, now we have an elephant and a cat in the room.
Medium’s Response to AI Content
Scott Lamb published a story yesterday titled, “Medium is for human storytelling, not AI-generated writing.”
Key points mentioned:
- “Over the past few months, things have certainly accelerated, in both expected and unforeseen ways.”
- “One key part of Medium’s approach: We are a home for human writing, full stop.”
- “Stories that are generated entirely by AI don’t fit with Medium’s mission of being a place for high-quality human stories that deepen people’s understanding of the world.”
- “Our distribution system already filters out a lot of fully AI-generated stories. “
- “Although AI detection tools are currently unreliable to the point of being unusable, the human editors and curators who contribute to our recommendation system often spot it instantly. “
- “We are hearing from publication editors across Medium that they are seeing too many submissions that are obviously AI-generated. “
- “AI-generated text is bland, lacking in human wisdom, and filled with subtle deficiencies.”
- “We’re amending our distribution guidelines to be more clear on this point.”
- “We’re also making a small change to clarify that we allow the responsible use of AI-assistive technology, rather than welcome it. It’s an important distinction. “
- “Medium is a place that is focused on substance. “
- “We will not promote fully AI-generated stories to a broader audience.”

Medium’s distribution guidelines have been updated!
In Summary
You can write and publish AI content to your heart’s content. It will only go to your personal network and will not be distributed to a wider audience.
They think AI help can empower writers, but even small snippets bring a lack of substance. They see AI, and they acknowledge it exists, and they are working on solutions to reduce its impact. Their stance is firm. They will always want Medium to remain a home for human writing.
