Medium Inquiring Minds Want To Know
10 Questions About My Writing on Medium

10 Enquiring Questions
1️⃣ Do you follow a routine every day for writing on Medium?
I usually read and write early each morning. First, I answer all the comments on my articles, then I take a quick look at the STATS. I usually write an article next. Sometimes I just finish one I had already started. Next, I start reading articles. Since I am in Toni’s list I have been keeping track of the Medium names of the articles I read for the day.
2️⃣ Do you choose your title before or after writing your story?
I usually write my title after I write the article. Sometimes I run it through a headline analyzer, which helps choose a better title. I have noticed bad news ranks higher than good news.
3️⃣ How long do you spend thinking of a title?
I don’t spend a lot of time, but I do try to choose a good title and I almost always use subtitles too.
4️⃣ Do you choose your main photo before or after writing?
Most of the time I pick a photo after I write the article unless I am using a personal photo. Sometimes I will choose more than one photo if appropriate for the topic.
5️⃣ If you are writing a story about yourself, do you try to choose an image that looks like you? For example, would you use a photo of a man if you are a woman or vice versa?
I don’t typically use a personal photo. I don’t use a man as I am a woman if it is a personal story. I don’t have an ironclad method of choosing photos as I want them to represent what I have written.
6️⃣ How many drafts do you write of your stories?
I typically have one draft that I edit several times. I often write an article in Google Docs, then when I have finished I put it in Grammarly to polish off the rough edges.
7️⃣ Do you ever start a story with something in mind and it turns into something totally different? Please give an example.
I have done this many times. If I am writing a poem I may change it entirely. If I am writing a medical article it does not change. If it is a simple human interest story I may change it quite a bit. For instance, I was writing about foolish behavior based on a prompt and I ended up writing about some very emotional events in my life as I couldn’t think of a very foolish event.
8️⃣ Did you ever get an idea for a story because of a comment you wrote to someone?
I can’t think of an example of this other than people will sometimes ask for a specific medical issue to be covered. The writing prompts certainly give me many ideas.
9️⃣ How long have you been writing on Medium, and how many stories have you published?
I have written 614 stories in about 14 months on Medium.
🔟 If you could change or add one thing to Medium what would it be?
I receive praise from other writers but Medium doesn’t seem to recognize my articles. I have received some Best Writer awards, and as I understand it they have vanished. I have yet to be boosted or even recognized in any substantial way. I would like an engagement number listed.
