Earnings Extension— Everest Release

I’m over the hill with this release

An actual pic with a pick-equipped climber on the summit of Mount Everest. Picture by Mário Simoes

It has been a steep climb. And it was a slippery slope. Reaching the summit was no easy feat. It was cold, but I struggled on. It was windy, but I kept my head high. It was wet, but the drizzle helped me hide the droplets that were streaming from my eyes. After an arduous journey, I shed tears of joy on the top of the world.

At the top, I discovered something new, something the world had never seen before: release 1.2.0 of my Earnings extension. Its nickname: Everest.

While finding a path, our resident sherpa, Anthony Lawrence (Pcunix) has been an invaluable help. He has moved mountains of work in testing and pointed me towards safer paths (those without bugs). Thanks, Anthony!

New features

This uphill grind has led to a couple of new and exciting features, along with the necessary removal of some hideous bugs. The new gear includes:

  • No more tedious waiting for the graph (🩹 bugfix)
  • Showing the actual earnings (🩹 bugfix)
  • Better performance (💉 booster-shot)
  • Replaced the graph with the earnings of the last six months (🎁 new)
  • An entirely new table with quick-filters (🎁 new)
  • Notification when the data was collected (🎁 new)
  • Loading Progress-indicator (🎁 new)
  • Improved Export (🧬 improved)
  • Shiny new layout (🧬 improved, but very much still a work in progress)

Let me first introduce you to the new features. Got your thermal gear on? It might get chilly.

In fact, it will get so cool that I bumped the version number from 1.1.x to 1.2!

New core layout 🎁🧬

A new and improved table

You won’t recognize the table from the previous release. I have done away with some columns and added a new one. I think the data now reflects the most important information when it comes to earnings. Take a look:

The new table displaying my icy earnings for the last couple of days. Screenshot by me.

Pretty clean new look, don’t you think? Let me take you through the features:

  • the table automatically expands the first day when you fire up the extension
  • if you want to deep dive into another day, just click on the day and it will show you more information.
  • a new column is introduced: earnings/read time
  • it’s lightning-fast

In this new table layout, I have decided to get rid of the earnings/view, the primary topics, the syndicated views and the ability to filter stories. This allows for a much cleaner look and speeds up performance tremendously.

New table filters for additional views

You don’t need a pickaxe to properly look at your earnings. Noticed the shiny new buttons above the table?

Quick-filters to quickly change views. Screencap by author.

Currently, there are three ways to display the table. You can group your earnings either by day, week, or by story. Although I liked the previous quick-filters, they gave me snow on my mountain. I’m happier with these.

Grouped by week. See the notes in the next paragraph. Screenshot by me.

A note about weeks and updates

Did you notice in my screenshot that I had zero earnings on my last day? That’s actually caused by the fact that Medium apparently runs two batches: one only collects views and the other brings in both earnings as well as views. Below the general information, you see how current the information actually is.

This screenshot was taken on Jan 14, 23:42. Only the views have been updated for today. That’s why I only have earnings for the day before in the table earlier in this story. Screenshot by me.

Note that the incorrect ‘earnings/story for this year’ is the only known issue in this release: I need to update the calculation, but let’s not make a mountain out of a molehill. This release is long due. I’ll fix it later.

I complained about silly dates earlier. Now it’s time to talk about silly weeks. For me a week starts on Monday. Other people, also in The Netherlands, like to think that a week starts on Sunday (even though most calendars have the week start on Monday here). I never understood why we can’t agree on a simple thing like that.

I took the easy way out with this one. If the mountain will not come to Mohammed, Mohammed must go the mountain, right? I simply determine your first day of the week based on your locale that is found somewhere in the depths of your computer.

A new graph of your past performance

While I like the old graph, it just took too much time to render if you have a strong or long presence on Medium (read my previous update about loading times over 9 minutes). I do want to extend the extension with some graphs. I have included a new one.

Earnings of my last six months. Current month in blue. Screenshot by me.

In the future, I want to add some more graphs. Daily, monthly and yearly earnings maybe? Maybe a graphical representation of the best performing stories? Who knows… For now, you get this one. If anyone has a suggestion for a good colour scheme, let me know.

What happened to the old table?

Buttons! I should update the look, though. Picture by me.

The old table is still present in the extension. And it actually has some improvements over the last version. Next release I will probably get rid of it. Access it via the ‘Legacy table’ button.

Performance 💉

Loading progress. Screenshot by me.

The performance is boosted immensely with this release. The longest wait-time is getting the data from Medium. I have made a little progress indicator for this.

Parsing the data, creating the table and drawing the graph is done in about 100ms on my system. This boost should be noticeable for just about everyone.

Actual Earnings 🩹

My biggest frustration was that the earnings in the extension did not match those of Medium’s Partner Program. I had always thought I was unable to access all the data. Boy, I was wrong. I had a glaring error in my code. Once I found it, it was removed easy enough.

If you’re curious, you can read more about it here.

Improved Export

The export now uses leading zeroes for months and days. This feature won’t mean a lot to most, but some people that do some automation with the csv will have an easier time parsing the data in their own program (credit to Anthony Lawrence (Pcunix) for the suggestion).

Future releases. I’m taking suggestions!

This version took about 10 beta-versions until I considered it to be ready to be released. I have learned a lot and I am real happy about the result. I couldn’t have done it without Anthony Lawrence (Pcunix) who did all of the testing as I didn’t have time to release it through my official beta-channel. Thanks again, Anthony!

Let me know in the comments what you think about the new version. Like the new layout? Want to request a specific view? Got ideas for colour schemes? Want a new graph or do you have something in mind that will blow our minds? Just let me know, even if you are unhappy with the new updates. I want to move forward with this extension. And the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Hit the comment-button to take that first step!

Don’t have any pocket change? No problem. Consider reading a story or two by these awesome supporters:
