Medium Dollars -(where exactly are they going?)
Are we being taken for a ride?
Something is happening on this platform. Jenny Lane has written about it, Michele Maize (The Sober Vegan Yogi)has written about it, Sahil Patel has written about it, and while this makes me hopeful that a change will come, I think it’s more than people clapping and running… I think the read times and the money allocation has changed, and since there are no clear answers, there’s nothing left to do than write a poem….
She used to make money On Medium.com But those fruitful days Seem to be gone
She claps, and she comments She reads till the end She tries to ensure Money goes to her friends
1.4K people Say that they’ll read But it seems like a lie They’re not doing the deed
The piece she wrote Tuesday Clocked a time of 7 minutes Yet it’s listed at 8 That’s not fair, is it
There’s nothing more That she can do She even wrote to support They haven’t a clue
Did Tony Stubblebine Change the way we get paid Is it a wonder So many haven’t stayed
They say just keep going They say it’s the season They say it will get better There’s so many reasons
But the numbers keep dropping Perhaps it’s her writing The money keeps dwindling Her nails short from biting
She tries not to check Her stats and her views Because every new morning She’s met with bad news.
Hours and hours She spends her time Writing her pieces Creating new rhymes
But she’s found her tribe And that’s really what matters They’re more important Then climbing that ladder.
She has to let go Of that dream to be rich Maybe it’s the algorithm It could be a glitch.
But she’ll keep on writing She has things to say Even if it’s not worth The meager pay.
She loves to share The things in her mind She loves to discuss them And watch them unwind
So thank you to all Who actually read Your honest commitment Is all that I need. 🤗
Thank you for reading… I’m feeling extra frustrated this morning — as my pay continues to dwindle despite my stats rising. Everything in this world is convoluted, I don’t know why I would expect this platform to be any different.
Yesterday I wrote a poem, with a listed read time of 2 minutes. The average read time was 2 min and 45 seconds.. I have 1.1K claps, 18 comments and yet it says I have 0 reads and made 0.00$. Am I going crazy? Are we being gas lit? Is this really a case of clap and run? Comment and run? Because that would mean that NO ONE actually read it — and I know that that can’t be the case… can it?
Does this mean that all of the people that I read aren’t getting the credit that they deserve? Are you not getting your well deserved dollars? Where is the money actually going then.
If I don’t make money because my pieces suck or no one’s interested in them, well that’s something I can live with… but if I’m not earning because of some other mysterious reason, well that just doesn’t sit right with me.
WHAT. IS. HAPPENING.
Thank you for reading… I KNOW that a lot of you are experiencing this as well — and I’d love to hear about it… I don’t think anything will be done about it — but sometimes venting is all we’ve got. 💙
