Medium does a lot of things that don't make sense. The answer is Yes, that's why I mentioned it. Their Oct 2019 MPP Newsletter linked to a FAQ on Stats which said this:

Here’s how we calculate your “average reading time”:

  • First, we determine each of your readers’ total reading time — if someone reads your story once for 1 minute and once for 2 minutes, we consider their reading time to be 3 minutes.
  • Second, we order all of your readers’ reading times in order from lowest to highest.
  • Finally, we take the number in the absolute middle and display that as your average reading time.

The figure in the middle is the median.

Strangely and unfortunately, the “special” Stats FAQ page on Medium has disappeared!!

Click on the relevant link in the Newsletter, and the page is not found. Another unhelpful thing by Medium.

Also, if you go to their Help centre and search upon “stats” you will find the OLD stats information!

I saved the October 2019 MPP Newsletter into DropBox for anyone reading this to have a read of it.

When you go to Dropbox, just click the X at the top right-corner of the dark blue banner to close the banner ad, click on the downward pointing arrow next to Sign up if you want to download/save the document to your computer. Click the right-pointing arrow at top right corner above the i to close the side-panel. Note that I’m providing these instructions for those who are not familiar with Dropbox.

Luckily for me that I love data or information and save information from Medium to my computer, for future reference. Why Medium would remove the STATS FAQ page, I have no idea. I think they have gone overboard and are trying to hide information, to get what they want.

They may want brand new members not to know much about calculating MPP payments and about what happened before the 2019 and 2020 changes, and to just go with what Medium wants them to believe. They believe that they are being relational and that removing the Topics labels from the curated stories Stats pages and from the Reader Interests info block under a story’s Settings, will result in less emphasis upon curation.

The down-side is that the Topic names that a story is curated under are a barometer of what further topics to aim to be curated under, as the stories are NOT always curated under the tag names (Topic and Tag names are different entities). It’s like being told you won an Award but not what for!

In my opinion, views and reads have dropped since the 2020 curation changes because readers are not finding writers through looking at the Responses and Highlights, which is a major way in which people found new stories and writers.
