Medium 2.0
A pursuit of the perfect platform

Medium was a brilliant idea. Thank you Ev Williams.
Medium provides an opportunity to anyone with the inspiration to write. The platform streamlines the promotion of published content, allowing writers to do what they do best, write. You don’t have to be an expert on SEO to have your voice heard. Ultimately, if you engage the platform with creative content you will succeed.
Readers are given a broad range of topics accentuated by authenticity with a diverse group of writers. Mainstream barriers can be bypassed, narratives can be nuanced.
What possibly could make Medium any better?
Sidenote first
My brain is wired for brainstorming. My energy levels go up just sitting around thinking about how to improve an idea or system. Naturally, writing on Medium gets me thinking about the platform a lot. I can’t help but share how I think Medium could be even better.
Let us pay more
I want to pay more than $5.00 a month because I know it will benefit all writers, including myself. I’m not saying change the monthly subscription price, though I would easily pay $20.00 each month. Let it be voluntary. Allow anyone to pay more than $5.00. I know many of us would, especially as we prospered on the platform.
Let us tip
This is the most important part. These rewards writers who have readers that really enjoy their content but maybe it’s not something that has broad enough appeal to go viral. Let me load up money on my account and set my own price per clap. Maybe I set it at $1.00. Then I give 5 claps. That is $5.00 I just paid directly to someone’s work I really appreciated. Maybe I set it at $0.05.
Feedback
Every organization relies on feedback in some form. I’m sure there are conversations happening all the time at Medium on how to make the platform better. Some of the best conversations on how to do that can come from your customers.
Pretty Please
Please, empower us even more with the Medium 2.0 features. Let us pay more. Give us more control to reward great content we enjoy, not just articles that find algorithmic sweet spots. Let us incentivize those who write on timeless topics, not just trending takes.
Again, thank you for Medium Ev Williams. I believe these features would fuel even more engagement and excitement on this one-of-a-kind platform we all appreciate.
