Meditation is My Lifesaver!

Thank God, I have the tool at my disposal.

This week is especially gloomy. It was raining for the past two days, and yesterday I felt worse. The shroud of sadness had taken over me; I realized that this could be the bout of depression, maybe a seasonal one. I have been a patient of clinical depression in the past, but I came out of it, cured now, got my life back because I did not give up on myself. My family supported me all along; I am grateful for that.

Photo taken by me

I likened my mental state to the picture above that I had taken just in the past week. The vultures symbolize my thoughts(mostly negative) and the sky shrouded with dark clouds mimics how I was feeling at the moment (I had to crop the picture a bit).

The good news is that there is a stark difference between how I perceived my thoughts then and now. Now, I am in the awareness that the sadness is there, but I will be okay. I did not have this realization when I was suffering in the past and thought I would die sooner. What has saved my life is meditation! I have learned to observe my thoughts. No, I am not a “yogi,” nor I claim to be spiritual or something. I fail a lot of times, but it is that moment when in a certain overwhelming situation, you start to realize that you are losing control and that you need to stop, which is I think is an incredible feeling… A powerful feeling of realization! Much like how Frodo slips into the evil power of the ring and Sam wakes him up in Lord of the Rings! It is exactly like that. With meditation, I believe that the ‘Frodo’ inside me does not slip into the darkness too often!

I thank my mentors because of whom I kept going with my meditation practice. The change is phenomenal! Over time, I have stopped allowing others to decide what is better for me. I have started listening to myself more! I am more at peace with myself and have stopped apologizing for being me! It is working just fine that way! It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that meditation is sort of magical.

You do not have to be a “yogi” to meditate.

I sit with myself just a few minutes a day, and that is it. Although my goal is to increase the duration from 15 to 30 minutes. But I have been consistently meditating for more than five years now. It makes a whole lot of difference even with just a few minutes a day. Believe me, it works!

How to do it?

I am not a “yogi” or an expert, but I practice. It is not easy. It is doable. This is what works for me… Try and find a quiet place; make that spot your own for your practice. The most common and known way to do it is, to focus on your breath. It is a good start I think. But we are humans. Our mind wanders. It is okay. It will! Our job is to command the mind to come back and stay put in one place. Tell it, I don’t want any words, any images! Relax your body, just be… Let the thoughts slide by quietly like the clouds passing in the sky. Watch them as they slide by! Come back to your breath. Are more thoughts clouding your mind now? No problem. Let them. Look at them in the “face.” Stare at them as they stare back at you! Keep going, my friend. As time passes, you shall feel lighter! Wonderful…

If you are still continuing with your practice, with time, you shall see begin to see a positive change within you. Needless to say that when your mind is calm, problems become more manageable.

All we need is a calm mind.

With meditation, that stillness of mind is achievable! We won’t become “Buddha” but at least we won’t feel hopeless! Isn’t that enough for us?

Mind is a beautiful servant, but a dangerous master (Gautama Buddha)

So what are you waiting for ? Let’s slow down! I will recap the steps that I follow:

Find a quiet place, save the spot.

Focus on your breath for a few minutes. Breathe deeply.

Relax your body, every muscle.

Observe your thoughts, you will get entangled for a bit.

Come back to your breath, observe. Imagine you are looking at a clear sky.

Command your mind to observe, stay still. Breathe deeply.

Breathe. Relax. Repeat and repeat every day.

Start your own practice today. Give yourself permission to get closer to your “self.” The more closer you get, the more peaceful you shall feel! Maybe you will find answers to some questions that were troubling you!!
