Measuring With Body Parts

Is This a Thing?

I don’t know how long I’ve measured things with my body. I thought other people did it all the time, too. Turns out I was wrong. So, I thought I’d ask you if you do it too.

It’s called anthropometry What I know is that when I spread my fingers out, the handspan from my thumb to my pinkie is eight inches. I know that the measurement from the tips of my fingers to my inside elbow is 14 inches. I know that my pinkie finger is two inches long. It’s actually called measuring in anthropic units. It’s an ancient measurement.

Come to think of it, they measure horses in hands. The Internet says when you’re measuring in hands on a horse, the hand is four inches, so a horse that is 16.2 is 16 hands and two inches high from the ground to the top of its withers, which would be where its neck joins the body.

Hand (unit). (2022, December 19). In Wikipedia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hand_(unit)

I understand the four-inch measurement comes from the red line at position 2 in the illustration, with your thumb held close to your palm and a diagonal line from the base of the thumb across to the other side of your palm. I just measured my hand in that position, and it was really close to the 4 inches. Of course, they used a man’s hand to standardize the measurement. King Henry VIII of England was the one who, in 1540, declared everybody needed to use the hand measurement for horses and other large livestock.

If I am out and about shopping and see something that interests me but I’m not sure if it will fit at home, I’ll measure off however many arm lengths I need. If I hold out my arms, it’s about a yard from fingertip to fingertip. Then, I return to the store or yard sale, and if the item is still there, I’ll buy it.

You don’t need to know exactly how long each of your body parts is, just a few of them, enough so that the things you purchase or make are the right size.

I just measured Millie, one of my cats, who, after having had breakfast, is 2½ hands tall. I can’t say it was all that accurate as she was moving fast, and Mommy has difficulty bending over these days.

I didn’t realize this wasn’t a done thing until I was out with somebody shopping. I remember she was absolutely astounded I measured things that way. That’s when I started wondering If anybody else does that.
