Maybe You Might Have Some Advice to Give

Time to speak up

I was eleven. The highlight of each week was watching the music videos. We’d sing, and dance, and move our bodies in time, and just be girls together, sharing emotions and giggles and sighs.

This song blew me away. It went right to my heart, and I wasn’t alone, because it was a number one in Australia that year.

Around the world, people are sharing their emotions. Things that go to their hearts. Things that are important. Things that need to be changed.

What makes people go out in the middle of a pandemic to protest? Wouldn’t a wise person stay at home and wait until the crisis has passed?

Look at this guy. He was doing what he saw as the right thing, handing back a lost helmet to the riot squad. You’d expect a thank you for being a good citizen.

How insensitive do you have to be to mistake a good-hearted gesture and respond with violence?

My heroes have been the police who listened and responded, taking a knee, demonstrating that they heard the calls for change.

And my villains have been those who called for yet more violence and division. How can people be so insensitive?

Quiet down your own thoughts, and listen to those of others. You might not agree, but that’s not important. Listening is.

Don’t be insensitive.

Please?
