May We Listen Deeply

For Thich Nhat Hanh

He let me speak until my words ran out — Leaves scattered into piles, falling from their winter tree, Colors faint but warm — the oranges, reds and browns — Lying beneath us at our feet.

And then he did one thing so precious and so rare. Instead of looking away from the now barren tree, He bent and picked up so many of my words and said them back To me, as treasures, as he held my gaze.

I heard them once again, from him, Now imbued with new meanings that I hadn’t understood. Meanings that lay between the two of us — in me, in him. I knew that he would always be my friend.
