When my gay partner and I were younger, we raised a child who needed a home. For several years, we lived together as a mostly traditional family — two parents and a kid in a large apartment with two cats, friends hanging around, sports gear littering the entranceway, and sometimes not enough homework getting done.

For many folks, raising kids is what family means, but is that the typical queer family experience?

You’d think so going by Adobe Stock where I license images for my stories. Typing in “queer family” brings up thousands of photos of same-sex couples with children, but that’s pretty much it.

In reality, queer families are MUCH more diverse than that heteronormative paradigm. We often create family, out of need. We often create very different KINDS of families, because while we may be different, love is a human universal.
