Summary

The undefined website invites readers to share stories and reflections on the diverse experiences of queer families, challenging the heteronormative representation often portrayed in media.

Abstract

The undefined website features a call to action for writers and artists to submit works that explore the breadth of queer family experiences. It emphasizes that queer families are not monolithic and can vary greatly from the traditional nuclear family model. The platform encourages submissions that reflect the unique challenges and triumphs of queer families, including those who do not fit the conventional mold or who are still in the process of finding or creating their own families. It also welcomes perspectives from cis/straight allies on how queer individuals are integrated into their extended families. The website provides submission guidelines and invites creative essays, poems, short fiction, memoir, art reviews, or history within their guidelines, with a particular focus on queer family narratives for an upcoming feature.

May I Present My Queer Family?

A Prism & Pen writing prompt

When my gay partner and I were younger, we raised a child who needed a home. For several years, we lived together as a mostly traditional family — two parents and a kid in a large apartment with two cats, friends hanging around, sports gear littering the entranceway, and sometimes not enough homework getting done.

For many folks, raising kids is what family means, but is that the typical queer family experience?

You’d think so going by Adobe Stock where I license images for my stories. Typing in “queer family” brings up thousands of photos of same-sex couples with children, but that’s pretty much it.

In reality, queer families are MUCH more diverse than that heteronormative paradigm. We often create family, out of need. We often create very different KINDS of families, because while we may be different, love is a human universal.

Could you present YOUR queer family? For the next two weeks, let’s make Prism & Pen a family affair.

  • Do you fit the Pete and Chasten Buttigieg model of a same-sex couple raising a child? Tell us about your triumphs and challenges.
  • Are you different enough that a heteronormative life doesn’t work for you? What’s your family like?
  • Have you not found or created family? Are you content or are you struggling?
  • As a cis/straight ally, how do queer people fit into your extended family?
