May 2020 Curation and Lessons

After a couple of rough months, a few things that helped momentum.

After a month or two of struggling with curation, I decided it was time to make some changes. I started to really track the posts I saw curated and began working backward from curation to creation. Never the less, I saw a few curations which helped give me some momentum.

I’ll share more about what I learned after I share my curated pieces.

How I’m Focusing on Improving Curation Ratio

This last month I spent some time trying to focus on how to increase the number of curated pieces here on Medium. After reviewing how my efforts went I found two main things:

  1. Publish with the big Publications.
  2. Stick to your previous curated topics.

First, you can do what I did very easily. I am going to outline it here to help you increase your chances of curation as well. What I did start with research. I looked back at my last 25 curated pieces. I focused on two things: curation topic and publication.

What I found was how I was getting curated over and over again in three main pubs: The Startup, Mind Café, and Publishous.

Then I looked at my most curated topics. Three topics I found myself in often were: Self, Productivity, and Parenting.

With this information, I focused on the big pubs I was already publishing with and continued to use my main three tags. What I did next, was look for similar tags to the ones that I was already being curated. This helped me expand into two new categories: work and remote work.

Based on these findings, here are a few steps you can use to increase your curation ratio:

№1 — Review Your Last 25 Curated Pieces

Focus on which topics you were curated in and what publications you published with for each piece. Create a shortlist of these topics and publications. (I used index cards)

№2 — Discover Similar Curated Topics

With your shortlist, go to the main page of Medium. At the top of the page are the Medium pubs and topics. If you scroll it to the right, you will find an option ‘more.’ Click this and follow the page. This page has a list of topics that all get curated. Create an additional list of similar topics to the ones you already are curated.

№3 — Choose Your Pubs and Topics

Next, choose your big pubs (2–3), your shortlist topics (2–3), and your similar list topics (2–3). Start writing pieces focused on these areas and what these pubs are looking for in a piece.

Last Thoughts

Ultimately, curation and big pub owners are going to choose what they are going to choose. However, with this information, you are improving your chances of curation, which will help your writing be seen by more readers.

It might take some time to get a lot of momentum. But, I am convinced it is possible to get momentum with the algorithm and the folks who are reviewing for curation. Which is all we can try to do on our own.

So, give it a try and good luck!
