Matryoshka dolls and my little pasta
Is it our instinct to want to open the door, if there is a door, unless you know it’s a pandora’s box?

When I was little, I made an 8 cm sized cubic box with a carbon paper. After I finished it, I made a 7cm sized box and put it in the 8 cm box. When I open the 8 cm box, there was a little smaller box inside. I decided to make another smaller box to put in the 7 cm box, and I made a 6.5 cm sized box. After that, I continued making smaller and smaller boxes. When I finally made the smallest box, I wondered what I should put it in. I thought for a while and put a tiny piece of spiral pasta ‘fusilli’ which must have meant something to me, a little Japanese girl.
My boyfriend and I went to Belarus a couple of weeks ago, and I had an impression that people like doors and mirrors there. For example, in one of the hotels we stayed, our room was on the 6th floor. When we got off the lift, there was a door to the corridor. We opened the door and as we walked along the corridor, there was another door in the middle, which we didn’t understand what was for. You might think they are fire-proof doors, but I don’t think so because they were cloudy glass doors. Anyway, we opened the second door and finally found our room. After we open the door of our room, there was another door which led us into the bedroom. That meant, we had to open four doors to go into our bedroom after we got off the lift every time.
It may be a part of the culture of former Soviet Union countries, though I felt like as if they are teasing us. It also reminds me of my experiment of the boxes in my childhood and Matryoshka dolls, also known as Russian nesting dolls.
When you open a Matryoshka doll, you will find another doll inside which is a bit smaller. After you open the second one, you will find another figure again and so on. You will find yourself wanting to open the doll to expecting the next one.
Some people say the Matryoshka doll is a metaphor of the feminine culture in Russian countries. Matryoshka doll represents the layer of the generation of women. At last, there is a little baby in the second smallest woman’s womb. It makes you want to see inside, makes you want to open the next door if there is a door.
Matryoshka dolls might be a metaphor for people’s mind. We have something confidential in very inside of us. It’s not easy to reveal, but you may be waiting for someone knocking your doors to reach it. We try to build psychological tricks to prevent our most private and sensitive self. At the same time, I might be waiting for someone finding my little piece of ‘fusilli’ deep inside me, though.
