Summary

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is revisited with modern adjustments for contemporary challenges, emphasizing the importance of meeting fundamental needs before pursuing self-actualization in the context of today's world.

Abstract

The article revisits Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, acknowledging its continued relevance in 2023 while suggesting necessary updates to reflect modern challenges. It outlines the five levels of the hierarchy: Physiological Needs, Safety Needs, Love and Belonging, Esteem Needs, and Self-Actualization. The modern world's abundance of supplies and the prevalence of fast food, addiction, and financial stress highlight the need to be mindful of basic physiological needs. Safety needs are challenged by economic uncertainties, prompting proactive financial preparedness. The article critiques the superficiality of modern networking, advocating for genuine relationships to fulfill Love and Belonging needs. It also criticizes the overemphasis on external validation for Esteem Needs, encouraging self-respect and internal validation. Self-Actualization, the pinnacle of the hierarchy, is described as an authentic pursuit of passion and purpose beyond superficial labels.

  • Self-Actualization is not about superficial labels but about understanding one's purpose and making a lasting impact.
  • Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs remains a valuable framework for building a meaningful life, even in the complexities of the modern era.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs For the Modern Human

Why We Must Stop Climbing the Ladder and Start Meeting Our Needs in 2023

Back in the 1940s a Psychologist named Abraham Maslow presented his theory on the Hierarchy of Needs. This theory is based on the premise that human beings are driven by a series of needs, starting from the most basic physiological needs and progressing towards more complex psychological and self-fulfillment needs. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs suggests that individuals must satisfy their lower-level needs before moving on to their higher-level needs. This makes intuitive sense as it’s hard to have the energy to ponder the inner workings of the universe when you’re starving to death or sleep deprived. As our basic needs are met, we are able to unlock the next level of human self-actualization and our true potentials.

There is a reason Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is still well known today (in fact, it's still taught in many introductory high school or college psych courses). And that’s because there is a pragmatism to his theory that makes intuitive sense even in 2023. However, there are a few adjustments that are important to make as the world has grown increasingly complex. After all, Maslow didn’t have access to the internet and his dopamine wasn't being tested by constant doom scrolling on social media. So with that, let’s take a closer look…

Level 1 (Base of the Pyramid): Physiological Needs — Food, Sleep, and Sane Decision-Making

At the base of the pyramid are the physiological needs, which are the most fundamental requirements for survival. These include things like air, water, food, shelter, sleep, and basic bodily functions.

In 1943 when Maslow introduced his Hierarchy of Needs the world was a very different place. The world was in the midst of WW2 and for the first time ever, Americans were met with food rationing. To aid allies overseas virtually every home in the US was affected. Items such as sugar, meats, cheese and milk were rationed. Overseas, individuals and families felt threats to basic physiological needs threatened to a much greater degree.

But today, we face a different world, and while supplies are often available in abundance, we must face another challenge, the temptations of the modern world. With obesity at an all-time high, fast food is quick, cheap, and constantly advertised. Both illegal and legal drug addictions and overdoses are rampant, and many are running themselves ragged to keep up with skyrocketing home prices and cost of living.

That’s why it’s essential to be mindful of physiological needs. To remember that running on empty — no sleep, caffeine, and fast food on repeat is a surefire ticket to Burnoutville. Even the most innovative minds need the basic stuff to truly succeed and move to that next level. So remember to prioritize your health and well-being, not just because you’ll feel better, but because physiological needs must be met in order to reach self-actualization.

Level 2: Safety Needs

Once physiological needs are met, the focus shifts to safety needs. These include the need for physical safety, financial security, employment, health, and protection from harm or danger. Meeting these needs provides individuals with a sense of stability and reduces feelings of anxiety and fear.

2023 has seen a slew of layoffs in the tech industry, skyrocketing inflation, and the recent wake-up call that supply chains could be disrupted without warning. It’s hard to focus when you’re feeling stressed and anxious about the future. One thing you can do to ease your mind, is start preparing for the future.

Now, I’m not necessarily talking Walking Dead prepper hysteria, but hey, maybe diversifying assets a bit. Putting a little extra in savings instead of buying another top-shelf whiskey at the bar on Friday nights, buying up some gold or Bitcoin, putting together an emergency kit, whatever it takes to ease your mind and help relieve anxiety.

Level 3: Love and Belonging — Networking Beyond LinkedIn

Now, I know you’ve probably got a number of social media apps and a killer LinkedIn profile to rake in those digital connections, but let’s get real — are you building genuine relationships? Today we seem to be accumulating more and more friends on Facebook and spending fewer hours with actual friends. This brings us to our third level, Love and Belonging.

After safety needs are satisfied, people seek social belonging and connection. This level encompasses the need for love, friendship, intimacy, and a sense of belonging within family, friendships, and communities. These genuine relationships are essential for bringing us feelings of acceptance, inclusion, and emotional support.

This is something, that in my opinion, we have gotten a lot worse at than when Maslow developed his theory back in the 1940s. Back then, there was no such thing as social media, there was a real sense of community. “Networking” was more about creating a like-minded tribe that had your back than what we’ve come to know as networking today. This means it will be more challenging for us to reach level 4. But challenging is far from impossible.

Sometimes all it takes is someone to take the first step, reach out to a friend you haven’t talked to in a while. Ask your mom if you can help her with something around the house, invite your coworkers or neighbors over for a BBQ. Do your best to cultivate a healthy social network outside of a social media network.

Level 4: Esteem Needs — Beyond the Ego Boost

Esteem needs relate to self-esteem and the desire for recognition, respect, and appreciation from others. This level includes both external esteem (such as achieving accomplishments and gaining recognition) and internal esteem (self-respect and self-confidence). By mastering this level you are able to strengthen feelings of accomplishment and self-worth. Unfortunately, in 2023 many of us have become accustomed to focusing more heavily on external esteem, or validation.

Yes, validation feels amazing, but are you seeking it from the right source? Are you chasing recognition from others, or are you basking in the glory of your own progress? Your worth isn’t in the applause; it’s in the grit and grind. In order to progress to the final level, we need to stop chasing “likes” and find genuine self-worth from liking ourselves.

Level 5: Self-Actualization — The Real Unicorn

Welcome to the summit, the realm of self-actualization. This is where innovation takes a cosmic leap, and your business and personal journies become your art. But its not about wearing a trendy Apple Watch and calling yourself “a disruptor.” It’s about understanding your purpose, connecting with your passion, and leaving a mark that outlasts the headlines. You don’t find self-actualization by chasing it; you stumble upon it while climbing the pyramid, step by step.

Final Thoughts

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs isn’t some dusty theory; it’s a blueprint for creating a foundation for a meaningful life. It’s about building a life where success is the byproduct of self-care, connection, authenticity, and purpose. Only by having all your essential needs met can you operate at your peak (no pun intended).
