Summary

"Mascara Heart" is a poignant poem reflecting on the pain of loss and the artistry in expressing deep emotions through tears.

Abstract

The poem "Mascara Heart" delves into the themes of innocence, the fleeting nature of life, and the profound impact of losing a cherished friend. It uses vivid imagery to describe the emotional turmoil and the weight of sorrow that burdens the heart. The author speaks of preserving the memory of the lost friend in the 'resin' of memory, while acknowledging the transient nature of relationships, even those with angels who walk with us for a while before returning to heaven. The poem also explores the metaphor of mascara tears, symbolizing the pain that stains one's eyes, as a form of art that tattoos the soul, suggesting that the act of crying and expressing sorrow can be a deeply personal and creative expression of grief.

Opinions

  • The author perceives tears as an art form, indicating that emotional expression can be akin to a tattoo on the soul.
  • There is a sense of reverence for the lost friend, who is described as 'so worthy,' suggesting the depth of the relationship and the value placed on the friend's life.
  • The poem conveys a personal connection to the pain of loss, with the author expressing a willingness to take on the sorrow of another to spare them from suffering.
  • The imagery of 'mascara tears' and a 'mascara heart' suggests that emotional pain can dramatically alter one's appearance and essence, much like a tattoo changes the skin.
  • The author implies that the journey of life involves both the companionship of 'angels' and the inevitable parting from them, which is a natural part of the human experience.

Mascara Heart

A poem

Eyes red You look so innocent, so human Life shining bright until you’re blinded Your heart hangs heavy near ruin You lost a friend, one so worthy Keep him in your memory’s resin The angels that join us for the journey Eventually must return to heaven

Telling a tale with mascara tears From your lone mascara heart Out of all the forms of art Tattoos your drained eyes must bear

I would drink them down Noxious, of the darkest dye Clumping up and breaking down So only I could cry

Telling tales with mascara tears From my lone mascara heart Out of all the forms of art Tattoos my drained eyes must bear
