Marrying the Dream Girl
It’s not about the girl, but it is.
“The dream is a little hidden door in the innermost and most secret recesses of the soul, opening into that cosmic night which was psyche long before there was any ego-consciousness, and which will remain psyche no matter how far our ego-consciousness extends.” ~ Carl Gustav Jung
Dreams have always played a role in my life.
Even as a young man, I instinctively knew that dreams were more than the mind staying busy while the body rested. I knew that dreams were the doorway to all that was beyond everyday life. I just knew it. That’s all.
So one night, as I went to sleep, I asked to know the name of the girl I was going to marry. Of course, I had a particular name in mind that I wanted to hear or learn about. So you can imagine my disappointment when I realized the next morning that I didn’t hear the name I wanted to hear, but this other name made itself known. It was a girl’s name, unusual. I had never heard it before, and I certainly didn’t know anybody by that name. So, somewhat disillusioned, I forgot all about it.
Over the years, dreams have been useful in communicating with and get answers from “that which is beyond all else.” Sometimes, I would wake from a dream, and I would have a crystal clear answer to a question that had been bothering me and to which I hadn’t been able to find a satisfactory answer.
Other times, I would wake up with a clear understanding of the direction I needed to move into or the next steps I needed to take in my life, or a crystal clear understanding of what I needed to know.
Of course, there were times when dreams created more confusion as to what it meant or why I dreamed about that particular thing, event, place, or person.
So, I took up learning about dreams. It was, as Mr. Spock would say, fascinating. I learned about dream interpretation, symbolism in dreams, lucid dreaming, and the role of dreams in metaphysics and spirituality.
I found out that dreams have played significant and meaningful roles in the two fields that humanity has used to understand the world in which we live, namely, science and religion.
Scriptures are full of stories about people who were encouraged in their dreams to go forth with their mission.
There have been many scientific discoveries that began or were explained in dreams to scientists. (reference link)
Carl Jung used his patients’ dreams to make breakthroughs in their development that he wasn’t able to make otherwise. (reference link)
And all this studying, in the end, validated what I instinctively knew from my very childhood, that dreams are windows and doorways into the unknown, and if we pay attention, we could find out things we may not be able to find out in any other way.
Oh, by the way, about twenty years after the original dream, I did end up marrying someone who bore the name I heard in my dream. It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, marrying your dream girl.
