Summary

Marcy, a llama with a strong sense of self-respect, confronts her fellow elevator passengers to assert her right to not be treated as a petting zoo animal, highlighting her dignity and equal status as a resident who pays strata fees.

Abstract

In the story "Marcy Takes a Stand," Marcy, a llama living in a penthouse, uses the confined space of an elevator to address her fellow residents. Despite the crowded conditions, she is unaware of the space she occupies and abruptly halts the elevator to make a declaration. Marcy expresses her frustration at being treated like a petting zoo attraction, emphasizing her respectfulness and desire for the same in return. Her emotional plea for respect and personal space is met with an awkward silence, leaving the impact of her words unclear as the elevator resumes its descent.

Opinions

  • Marcy feels disrespected by the unsolicited petting from her neighbors, which she likens to being treated as a petting zoo animal.
  • She believes that her fleecy and majestic coat does not grant others the right to pet her without permission.
  • Marcy values her privacy and personal space, expecting the same respect given to other residents.
  • The story implies a humorous yet poignant commentary on the importance of consent and respect for personal boundaries, even in unexpected contexts.
  • The silence following Marcy's speech suggests a possible misunderstanding or discomfort among the human occupants regarding how to interact with a non-human resident asserting her rights.

Marcy Takes a Stand

Marcy rode the elevator down from her penthouse and hummed along with the terrible music. By the 9th floor, the space was quite crowded. The human patrons did their best to squeeze together, but Marcy just hummed away, oblivious to how much area she was occupying.

After a quick head count, she inhaled audibly and announced to everyone present: “I’m sure you all are wondering why I gathered you here today.” She then punched the emergency stop button with her strong, prehensile lips. “It’s high time we got all our ducks on the same page!”

Marcy hummed a few bars nervously as she shifted her hooves to see all the occupants at once. She stretched her neck out in determination and finally stated: “I am NOT a petting zoo llama!! Yes, my coat is fleecy and majestic, but that doesn’t give you the right to pet me in the hallways without asking! I am respectful! I keep to myself! I pay strata fees just like all of you! I deserve respect!” Her lips quivered with emotion and her ears drooped as she waited for a response.

A man coughed, awkward and uncertain.

DING!

The elevator started moving again. In silence.
