Subtle mass killing connections

I have a very dear new agey friend who, on occasion, has called herself a Buddhist. She has numerous Buddha statues around her home, although I’m not sure that qualifies her as a Buddhist. She has used several other labels in describing herself as well. She also has a picture of the Dalai Lama on her altar as well as one of Martin Luther King, Jr. and a couple of photos of Hindu saints I can’t remember the names of. Her primary spiritual practice is drawing mandalas.

Anyway, she once told me that every spot on the planet has a corresponding spot somewhere else on the planet. The connection might be geophysical (as in earthquakes and volcanoes) or it might be historical or it might be vibratory (as in spiritual consciousness). According to her, when a major event happens in a particular place, a reciprocating event happens at the corresponding spot elsewhere on the planet.

If you have been following the news — and going deep below the headlines — then you know that there has been a mass killing going on across the globe in the Buddhist nation of Myanmar — formally known as Burma. The killing has been escalating to genocidal proportions.

The victims of this genocide are a Muslim minority and it is being perpetrated against them by the Buddhist majority. Richard Gere is surely freaking out. Buddhism has always been considered the most peaceful, non-violent of religions. But now Buddhists are engaging in genocide.

Is this world flipping out, or what?

But let’s look for a connection. The cultural and spiritual center of Myanmar is a city in its very center with a population of a little over a million people called, Mandalay.

Mandalay was founded by the king of Burma in 1857 on the 2,400th anniversary of the founding of Buddhism to fulfill a prophecy of a new world center of Buddhism; a shining metropolis dedicated to the tenets of Buddhism. The root of the name, Mandalay, is ‘mandala,’ a geometric pattern that is symbolic of a microcosm of the universe.

Many years later, MGM Resorts named their new Las Vegas hotel and casino, Mandalay Bay, because it sounded cool and exotic and Asian. (The actual city of Mandalay is far inland and not near any bays but that didn’t matter.)

Can you see the subtle connection? A mass killing is going on in Myanmar, a country whose cultural center is the city of Mandalay. And now a mass killing just happened at the Mandalay Bay hotel and resort in Las Vegas, a cultural center of sorts in America.

A mass killing happens in one part of the world and there is a corresponding event at a corresponding spot on the other side of the planet. It may be a very subtle connection but does my friend have a point? Do these connections really exist? Is every place a microcosm of the macrocosm? Do the subtle connections highlight the macro-cosmic problems? And are those macro-cosmic problems a reflection of mass micro-cosmic problems? Is everything somehow connected? Can a simple word show us the interconnectedness of our problems? What does it take for us to feel the pain of fellow humans on the other side of the planet? What does it take for us to think and feel globally and act and feel locally? What mandala are we drawing and projecting into the collective?
