Summary

Alexander Jackson, a University of Iowa student, is accused of executing his family after his father insisted he get a job or move out.

Abstract

On June 15, 2021, Alexander Jackson reported a home invasion that led to the discovery of his entire family shot dead in their Cedar Rapids home. Despite initial claims of a masked intruder, investigators found no signs of forced entry and arrested Jackson, the sole survivor with a minor gunshot wound. The Jackson family was well-regarded in the community, with Alexander and his sister, Sabrina, studying at the University of Iowa. The motive for the killings remains unclear, but Alexander had recently been told by his father to find employment or leave the family home. During his court appearance, Assistant Linn County Attorney Ryan Decker described the crime as an execution, and Alexander was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, potentially facing life in prison without parole if convicted.

Opinions

  • The police and prosecutors seem to believe that Alexander Jackson orchestrated the murders of his family, given the lack of evidence supporting his intruder story and his subsequent arrest for homicide.
  • The community was shocked by the news, indicating that the Jacksons were seen as a respectable family, and their deaths were unexpected and out of character.
  • Ryan Decker's description of the crime as an "execution" suggests a premeditated and calculated act, rather than a crime of passion or self-defense.
  • The article's tone implies skepticism towards Alexander's account of events, highlighting the discrepancies in his story and the evidence found by investigators.

Man Kills His Entire Family After His Father Told Him To Get A Job

On June 15, 2021, dispatchers at the Cedar Rapids police department received an unnerving call from an Iowa man named Alexander Jackson.

The seemingly distressed 20-year-old told police that an intruder broke into his home, shot him and his dad, and then fled the area.

However, this wasn’t an ordinary case of a ‘‘grab-and-go’’ home robbery that went awfully wrong.

The reality was much worse.

When police officers arrived on site, they were greeted by a gruesome scene.

Alexander’s 61-year-old father, Jan Jackson, his 68-year-old mother Melissa Jackson, and his 19-year-old sister Sabrina Jackson were all found shot in the head in a way that resembled a group execution.

The sole survivor there was Alexander himself, who had strangely only suffered a gunshot to his foot and other minor injuries.

The news of the Jackson family slayings came in as a complete shock to the small community of Cedar Rapids.

The Jacksons had gained a quiet and respectful family reputation over their 10-year-long stay in the Cedar Rapids area.

Both Alexander and Sabrina were also students at the University of Iowa studying in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Apart from that, the family members sustained blank criminal records in Iowa, which made their deaths all that more bizarre.

Later during their investigation, the local authorities recovered a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle from Alexander’s room.

Alexander recognized the weapon as his father’s personal rifle, which he and his father had cleaned the night before, and had left it on the fireplace overnight.

When asked to describe how the killings unfolded, Alexander said:

‘’I woke up to the sound of gunfire and I was shot in the foot during a struggle with a masked man over the rifle.’’

He claimed that he had no knowledge of what had taken place prior to that moment.

Having found no sign of forced entry at the home where the killings took place, the police arrested Alexander on suspicion of homicide.

He was then transported to Unity Point Health, St. Luke’s Hospital, to receive medical treatment for his injuries.

Alexander denied having any involvement with the murders of his family members.

Investigators tried to establish the motive behind the killings but with no success.

However, he admitted that his father had recently told him to:

‘‘Find a job or move out the house.’’

On June 16th, 2021, Alexander appeared at the Linn County Courthouse in Cedar Rapids.

During his initial court hearing, Assistant Linn County Attorney Ryan Decker said:

“This was more than just a murder, it was an execution of the defendant’s mother, father, and sister.’’

The defendant had nothing to state except his full name.

Alexander Jackson was charged with 3 counts of first-degree murder, and his bond was set to $3 million.

If convicted for the murders, he faces a maximum penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

His trial is scheduled for some time in 2022.
