Jose Manuel Guzman was a 32-year-old landscaper living in El Paso, Texas.

Originally from Guatemala, Guzman moved to El Paso at the age of three and had been legally living there for almost twenty-nine years.

In early 2021, Guzman discovered he had a biological sister named Karla Mariela Marroquin Chavez de Ortiz, living in Guatemala.

Soon after, the long-lost siblings reunited. However, despite knowing they were closely related, Guzman and Karla fell in love with each other.

Their relationship later turned sexual, and the two decided to move into Guzman’s home together.

At first, the odd couple seemed to be getting along just fine, with just some minor turbulences appearing between them every now and then.

However, around the second half of 2021, their relationship started going downhill.

Guzman became possessive over his sister, preventing her from meeting or conversing with other men.

Apart from that, he also started physically abusing her whenever he felt like it.

On the evening of February 1, 2022, Guzman and Karla got into an argument about a trifling matter.

The argument enraged Guzman, leading him to punch Karla and knock one of her teeth out.

The very next day, Guzman woke up feeling that someone had been in his house.

He confronted his sister about it, believing that she had something to do with the unexpected visitor.

Karla told him that she had brought a male friend over and had sex with him.

Upon hearing that, Guzman grabbed an electric handheld ‘‘massage instrument’’ lying near him and proceeded to strike Karla in the forehead with it.

He then dropped the massager, picked up a baseball bat, and continued frantically hitting his sister with it.

By the time he stopped hitting her, Karla had already passed away.

Shocked by his actions, Guzman called his mother and told her what he’d done. She, in turn, contacted the authorities and asked them to perform a welfare check at his home address.

In a last-ditch effort to cover up his sister's murder, he tried mopping up her blood and concealing the murder weapons by placing them in a basket filled with laundry.

After finishing, he left his house and went hiding at his mother’s place.

When detectives arrived on the scene, they searched Guzman’s apartment and found Karla’s lifeless body slumped over in her room.

They also had no hard time recovering both the massage instrument and the baseball bat used in her murder.

Hours later, Guzman voluntarily surrendered himself to the police.

During questioning, Guzman said that his sister’s killing happened in the heat of the moment and wasn’t purposeful.

Additionally, he admitted to routinely smoking crack and marijuana.

On February 3, 2022, Jose Manuel Guzman was charged with murder and currently awaits trial.

His bond is set at $1 million.

He also has various other pending charges, including allegedly breaking a man’s arm with a baseball bat in 2017, family violence, and drug possession.
