Mama’s Promise
As you hold your newborn, his life holds you.
You — Me.
When my breath was lost and my heart stopped, you found your place, picked a beat, and shared space.
My whole body shook as I ran my fingers slowly over the creases on your hand. I wrapped the length of my arms around you and raised you to my lips.
My whisper spoke a dream, wish, vision, promise…
MY WORD.
You will explore a world built with strength and passion but left undone. Love makes a warm and safe home inside you. Through all our fun, fears, and tears, I will always love you. I will listen to your cry. Your sadness weeps for your need. I am here for more than a hug. You, be you. I’ll be me.
Fear creeps in where wonder ceases. Darkness, strangers, Oogie Boogie bugs, and new things flood your world. They all create a shell for your protection. I give you my shield of trust. Reach for it. Push it through all the hurt that scares you.
Anger can shake all that you are.
Let it free — Yell.
Cry loud and long.
Then slow down, sit down, and we can talk. I can listen. We can pray. All these feelings belong to you. They are yours. Mine are mine. Together we are safe to share, express, and try our best.
Celebrate your silliness. A gift from me to you. Oh, wait! Surprise! A gift from you to me.
May we do it all… Building forts with blankets, painting pudding portraits, making shadow puppets, eating s’mores by the campfire, splashing in large puddles, and snuggling together for needed bedtime stories.
May we end each day with a smile and embrace.
You — Me.
And with my breath, my promise.
I love you. May you love me.
