Malaysian Curry Lunch Happiness
November Six-Word Photo Story Challenge: “Happiness”
Malaysian Curry Tiffin Lunch for 2
I was a midwest American meat-and-potatoes girl when I arrived in Malaysia 50 years ago. I had to learn to eat new types of food with very new-to-me spices. Wow. Curry for lunch?? I didn’t even know what a curry was back then.
Now, give me happiness. Give me a curry lunch, please.
We are back in Malaysia and enjoying every meal and every mouth full of food. Yesterday, we had lunch at the famous old Eastern and Oriental Hotel (known as the E&O). When our daughter was visiting with us in Penang a few days ago, she gave us gift certificates to use at the E&O. One of their delightful options is a Malaysian Tiffin Lunch in their Palm Court. A tiffin lunch means that the lunch arrives in a kind of Asian traditional lunch box consisting of a stack of metal containers, each compartment holding a different dish.
My tiffin set had poppadoms and achar, rice, a cauliflower curry, and a beef rendang curry. My husband’s tiffin lunch was the same except he had selected a mutton curry rather than the beef rendang curry. A poppadom is a very thin circular crisp made from a mixture of flour and water fried in oil. Achar is a mix of pickled vegetables.
We have a few more weeks to go on our Malaysia visit. We will return to the E&O for another curry tiffin lunch. But, there are many other options too. Today’s plans include going to the jetty area in Georgetown, Penang to try some of the food in the hawker stalls at the jetty. More happy deliciousness ahead of us today.
