Malaysia is winning in the conductor chip war between America and China.
How Malaysia became a source for semi-conductors.
In the war between China and US, it is actually Malaysia that is reaping the rewards of the war between them.
How does this make sense? One only has to look at the war in closer detail and understand why both Chinese and American companies are investing in Malaysia.
You see the war began to limit China’s advanced technological growth. For America, China’s growth is a competition to its own industries and they’re leaving the US far behind in terms of tech, which I think many people can understand here.
So, what America did is that it imposed controls in place that limit Chinese companies’ ability to purchase materials, tools and intellectual property which would manufacture the chips.
And this has affected many international companies in China, who needed a way to diversify their investment so that they don’t take a huge hit. Which is why multinational companies have shortlisted some countries to diversify their production based on whether the infrastructure to manufacture exists or not.
That’s key here.
And they shortlisted Vietnam, Singapore, and Malaysia.
And the reason why they mainly went with Malaysia is because they have a better technological infrastructure to produce those chips.
And I’m mainly talking about American companies here. However, Chinese companies who have also been hit by these import controls needed to diversify, so they also began setting up manufacturing branches in Malaysia alongside American companies.
And now what you see here is that America and China are fighting in Malaysia to attract top talent and investment which would outperform each other on the production of chips.
So for example, some Chinese companies have resorted to dropping flyers next to American companies offering employees better pay and better benefits to attract talent away from those companies.
Now how does this war affect Malaysia?
Well, of course these investments and this war positively benefits Malaysia’s GDP and unemployment rate, but it also benefits Malaysia indigenous technological revolution.
Malaysian start-ups began producing these chips adding more competition in the market, as well as the fact that these Malaysian companies have now began expanding into China bringing in more investment for the Chinese.
In this equation, the one that has to do the heavy lifting is America as now they will have to contend and compete with China and now Malaysia, now this competition has made Malaysia the largest producer of chips.
And this boosts Malaysia power in the region, their influence grows, as well as their industries, because semi-conductor chips form a backbone of the digital economy. Similar to oil forms the backbone of any economy.
As well as the fact that Malaysia is a significant pillar of the global supply chain for semi-conductors.
