Making Pies

Keep calm and bake a pie

Good apple pies are a considerable part of our domestic happiness.

Jane Austen

Slice the apples thinly, Leave the skins on. Add sugar and nutmeg, Then cinnamon.

Roll out the dough gently, No anger here. Starting from the center, Use your hands, dear.

Form the shell in the plate, Add in the filling. Weave the crust on the top, No edges spilling.

In the oven, it goes. We look, we grin. It is ready to eat, And we dig in.

Maria Ann (Granny) Smith discovered a green apple growing on her property in Australia in 1868 in the same place that she often tossed French crab apples grown in Tasmania. The seedling developed into bright green-colored apples that are now one of the most well-known apples thanks to its tart flavor and baking abilities.

I was in Haven, a small rural Tennessee town, almost next door to the larger town of Hickory. In that prosperous fall, my carnival, attracted by the two towns so close together, would make a ten-day stay.

I met her on the second night. It surprised me to see her enter the tent. It was rare for someone her age to seek a reading from the cards, for the path ahead was narrow with the ending seemingly near.

Then she asked for a revelation spread, the Mystic Seven. Startled, I laid out the cards, and she told me to read them for myself. She said that I was at a crossroads and needed insights into my past, present, and future.

The cards foretold I will return to this town many years from now. A young girl, born to the Stewart family whose ancestors established this town, will bring me back.

Granny Weaver, that Appalachian witchy woman with secrets of her own, became my friend that night.

One rainy morning, when customers were scarce, I slipped away to her small cottage, and she taught me the secret of making pies. Barbara

This poem is told from the point of view of a fortune teller, named Barbara at this point in AD 1958. A combination of a curse and her own powers has allowed her to live many centuries and travel all over the world.

Writing this story has me thinking constantly about sweets.

Two pies, the decadent, calorie-laden Chocolate Bourbon Pecan and the sugar-soaked Granny Smith Apple, have come and gone at my house.

I have hidden the “I am telling the truth” scale in the closet, and I am thinking happy thoughts about flowing gauze skirts with forgiving elastic waistbands.

Bon appétit!
