Summary

The author is observing anomalies in Medium's statistics, indicating instances where they have earned money without corresponding views or reading time.

Abstract

The article discusses a perplexing situation where the author has earned money on Medium without any views or with zero seconds of reading time, suggesting a possible bug in Medium's analytics. The author presents three illustrative examples of stories that have made money under these irregular conditions and offers three feasible explanations for the phenomenon. The first explanation posits that views and reads might accumulate over time, making real-time statistics misleading. The second attributes the issue to a potential bug in Medium's system, which is surprising given the platform's emphasis on content performance metrics. The third explanation, offered with a touch of humor, suggests that the author might simply misunderstand how to interpret the statistics, potentially embarrassing them with this public inquiry.

Opinions

  • The author is uncertain and openly admits to not having an answer to the irregularities observed in Medium stats.
  • There is a suggestion that Medium's current method of displaying stats could be improved to better reflect the correlation between daily earnings and the actual performance of stories.
  • The author seems to believe that a bug in Medium's stat tracking is a plausible explanation for the observed anomalies.
  • The author expresses some self-doubt, humorously considering the possibility that they may be misinterpreting the statistics entirely.
  • The author is eagerly awaiting explanations from others that could clarify the confusion and is open to being corrected if the misunderstanding is on their part.

Medium stats make no sense

No, it’s not clickbait, I’m making money with no views, but I think it’s more because there’s a bug in Medium stats that because I’ve mastered and haked the website.

I am very unsure of what’s going on. I will not attempt to give an answer to it, but lately, I’ve been seeing some irregularities on my Medium stats and I wanted to share them in the hopes someone can figure out what the hell is going on.

We have two categories of weird things that happen on Medium. The first one is money made with no view (and therefore no reading). The second one is money made with no reading (even if it might have views, it says that MRT is 0 sec).

Stats of Stories that made Money with no views

I don’t have social media. And here is why:

There have been many more stories that have a similar graph situation, however, I found that these three examples were illustrative enough, I’ll add them if anyone is curious.

Feasible explanations of this situation

The first explanation I’ve come up with is that views and reads accumulate. Since the money you get from the stories you do depends on the amount of stories the reader reads, it’s hard to calculate on the spot. Sure, this makes, sense, but then, wouldn’t it be more reasonable to change the stats of past days so it correlates with the money you made on the set day instead of just being misleading?

Another explanation it’s that’s just a bug to be fixed, which would honestly surprise me that Medium messes this up since it a big part of their brand identity: seeing how good (or bad) your published stories do.

The third one is that I have no idea how to read stats, this confusion is entirely my fault and this story has completely embarrassed me.

I’m desperately waiting for answers that can clear up my confusion. Thanks for your time.
