Many people write for different reasons. I write because it's therapeutic and allows me to help others and vent my emotions in an understandable way.

If you want to create passive income through Medium, it’s going to take a lot of consistency. Writing articles that go viral and are read by thousands of members takes a lot of work.

Growing an audience is part of the reason why I am staying the course and continuing to write every single day. Writing has become instinctual for me, and if I fall out of this rhythm, I fear that it’ll be hard to pick up on the same foot.

People pray their articles will go viral and make them a thousand bucks. After making that thousand bucks, are you planning on quitting? I wouldn’t advise doing so. Writers who have cultivated large audiences do so by consistently writing helpful articles.

Here are 3 long-term ways to look at earning an income with Medium:

1. You Will Earn Royalties for Life

As long as Medium doesn’t collapse as a writing platform (highly doubt it), you will be able to earn your Medium monthly income for years to come. It’s almost like authors who write books — they receive royalties 5, 10 years down the line.

The passive income will eventually pay itself back for the time that you committed to writing kickass stories. It’s going to take time for some articles to get the attention they deserve, but by putting things in perspective, you’ll maintain the motivation to write.

To this day, one of my best-paying articles was written in my second month of Medium. I’m not crazy about numbers, but this shows that we never know what’s going to be a hit or not. We just have to keep writing.

2. Don’t Worry about Virality

Stressing about whether or not an article will go viral or be clickbait enough to get people to read it is pointless. A solid approach for writing should be to help one person live their life a little easier.

Through stories, we can grow a lot as people and achieve the hopes and dreams that we have deep within ourselves.

Going viral is exciting, but unless it comes from Medium members, we won’t get paid as much as we’d like. This is why the importance of building an audience of readers who love your work is crucial. Just stay consistent and keep producing quality content. The money will follow.

3. Some of the Top Earners Have Been Around for Five or More Years

If you think that the top earners on Medium got lucky, think again. Some writers have been on the platform since it first started in 2012, producing content and adapting to the evolving interface on the platform.

To think that just because you aren’t getting the results you want three months or even a year after starting is not good for your mental health.

It’s a long-term game where you’ll eventually grow as a writer as long as you keep learning and keep living. The great stories will generate by what you do outside of writing equally as much as when you are writing.

Reading stories about writers who almost had no traction for two years is reassuring to me. I don’t let the numbers get to me. I just keep writing. My time will come. Our time will come.

Final Thought

Writing should be fun and therapeutic, but of course, it’s nice to receive compensation for our time and efforts. By thinking about earning a nice income as a long-term game, we’ll do our mental health a favor.

The money will come! Just believe in the process. Don’t stop writing, unless you really feel like it’s not a hobby you love. It’s fine to quit and pursue other projects, but Medium is such a great opportunity to earn a lucrative amount of money. It just takes time.
