Make Brain Work for You, Not Against You — Unlock Brain Power
a simple guide to brain productivity
It is almost my 5th year I’m researching the brain, its capacity, emotional intelligence, and productivity. Read several books, articles, research papers, have taken several courses and consultancies. Also, my bachelor and master thesis topics were on Emotional Intelligence.
The brain is the ultimate tool for productivity which has an amazing capacity to analyze, process information, and solve problems. The thing is you have to decide it should work for you or against you. Just imagine if your brain easily works against you, pulling you further from what you want. Simply those things will stop our life mission.
What do we do? The point we have to do is keeping our brain on track. We can make this happen by working on mindfulness.
Before practices lets ask ourselves, “what we do not know or what lies we do know about our brain?”
- The brain has limitations. There’re several movies show us if we use a hundred percent of our brain, we will become something supernatural being. But the truth is not like that.
- We don’t understand how to take care of our brain — It’s the mechanism, you have to choose proper food and energy for that.
- We can’t use the full potential of the brain — Actually, we can do if we truly want and work for that.
I would like to share some practices that I’m using which sure will work for you also.
Stop multitasking
Teach your brain to understand priorities. According to Warren Buffet, we should limit ourselves to five top tasks, the rest of our list should wait until we have addressed those priorities.
MIT neuroscientist Earl Miller explained that our brains “are not wired to multitask well… when people think they’re multitasking, they’re actually just switching from one task to another very rapidly. And every time they do, there’s a cognitive cost.”
I’m using a simple guide to avoid multitasking. Here are some tips for you:
- Make a to-do list - Prioritize the most challenging tasks - Schedule multiple breaks - Make it clear that you don’t want to be distracted
Maintain a flow of positive energy
Emotional Contagion — the transfer of feelings and behaviors from one person to another. If you associate yourself with positive people, you will be a positive person. If your “friends”, even “loved ones” make you feel bad try to change your path. And get rid of negativity. I’m not saying run away from problems. But try to solve your own and save energy. Also, be kind, treat nicely.
The old saying “birds of a feather flock together”; People in a group become the same over time. Surround yourself with positive people. Do not allow negativity from entering your brain.
Fix your sleeping
Start your day as early as possible, but also sleep well. Try to maintain your schedule, follow the lead of countless successful people, and use their experiences. You can work a lot, but your brain needs to figure out and analyze all the information you received daily. Do not trade rest for work, you are losing our overall well- being and brain functionality.
If you want to experience the importance of sleep on our brain, do not sleep 48 hours. Probably you will become a zombie. Here are some tips for better sleep:
- Eat early - Be comfortable - Relax and focus on calming activities such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing even listening classical song - Do not use electronic devices before sleep - Read a book but not scientific - Avoid noise - Manage your room lights
Keep stress to a minimum
Stress damages a person’s brain. I’m aware it is impossible to completely eliminate stress from our lives, but we can minimize it.
Find some ways that make you calm and feel better. For instance, Warren Buffett plays the ukulele. Your hobbies and joys in your life will help you. Also, you can start exercising or exercise simply more. I’m always fighting with stress, in order to minimize it almost one year ago, I have started to go to martial arts. I felt the difference on the first day of training. If you are already fighting with depression maybe this article will help you.
Keep your positivism and work hard. Life is too short for negative feelings and quite long for better experiences.
