Summary

The text reflects on the passage of time and the transient nature of life and memories, symbolized through the act of maintaining a lawn and the discovery of a previous homeowner's personal items.

Abstract

The narrative describes a current resident observing a former neighbor meticulously tending to his lawn, an activity that once was the current resident's responsibility. This observation sparks a reflection on the passage of time, as the author contrasts the neighbor's past occupancy with their own tenure in the house, raising children and eventually stumbling upon the neighbor's family memorabilia hidden away. The discovery of photographs, savings bonds, and birth certificates in the basement evokes a poignant realization that despite our efforts to maintain and preserve, all things, including memories and legacies, face eventual oblivion.

Opinions

  • The author seems to hold the neighbor in high regard, noting his superior lawn maintenance skills.
  • A sense of nostalgia and respect is conveyed for the previous occupants and their history within the same walls.
  • There is an underlying theme of impermanence; despite the care taken in maintaining a home and garden, the author acknowledges that all things will ultimately be forgotten.
  • The author implies a personal connection to the theme of maintaining a lawn, perhaps seeing it as a metaphor for life's routines and the legacy one leaves behind.

Maintaining the Lawn

photograph author’s own

Across the street

the neighbor is mowing his lawn again,

back and forth, back and forth

like time passing.

Once he lived here,

in this house,

maintaining the grass far better than we have ever been able.

Years after we took title,

made these four walls our own,

raised children,

we found a cache of his families’ memories

stored in a box in

the

basement ceiling,

photographs, savings bonds, and

birth certificates,

proof that, even when maintained,

eventually, everything

will be

forgotten.
