Maharishi Mahesh Yogi Quotes for these Challenging Times

[Updated Sept 13, 2020] Timeless advise on the pandemic from one of the past century’s most influential gurus from the East.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (1918–2008) brought the practice of Transcendental Meditation (“TM”) to the world and was the meditation teacher and guru of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, among many other celebrities in his day. I learned TM in 1974 and consider it the most beneficial life-practice that I have ever done. Below are some of my favorite quotes from Maharishi, which I think offer some insight into his teachings and how they might apply to the COVID-19 pandemic and other challenges of what I like to call “the great global transition of 2020”.

(1) How to interpret the challenges that the world faces in 2020:

“Every situation is God Sent. With this supreme wisdom of life any situation can be used to our advantage and regarded as a blessing of Mother Nature.”

“The world is as we are.” and “All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think, we become.”

Ultimately, everyone, everything, every event, and every experience is a form of the ultimate reality of “All That Is”, which many people call “God”. It is not possible for anything to not be part of “All That Is” because it comprises everything by its very definition.

Thus, COVID-19, and the George Floyd protests, and any other challenges to come in the remainder of 2020 (and beyond) are “God Sent”, as well as being a direct reflection of who we are, individually and collectively. How can we consider these challenges as opportunities for our personal and global growth — as a blessing that will make us better as individuals and as a planet?

We create our reality through our thoughts, through how we interpret the challenges that we face. We could see ourselves as victims of a ruthless “God” who is punishing us, if that is what we think. Alternatively, we could see ourselves as having a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help bring about a world that we thought could only exist in our dreams.

(2) How to respond to the challenges of 2020:

“Whatever we put our attention on will grow stronger in our life.”

“Every thought, speech, and action of a person influences everything in the environment.”

“Every individual is affecting the whole universe.”

We impact the world through how we interact with it. This happens at both a physical action level, and at the level of thought. Even if we cannot see them, thoughts generate subtle energies that interact with subtle energies in the world around us. So be careful in what you think, say and do. To bring about the planet of our dreams, we need to put our full attention and intention toward that utopian goal. This is, actually, not so hard to do….

(3) How to make the world of our dreams a reality after 2020:

“Don’t worry about the situation of the world. You must be very happy, very very happy! Only through happiness and waves of bliss you will be able to help your country and the entire world in an automatic manner. You will remain ever invincible when you don’t allow anything to obscure your happiness.”

“Be simple; be kind; stay rested. Attend to your inner health and happiness. Happiness radiates like the fragrance from a flower and draws all good things toward you. Allow your love to nourish yourself, as well as others.”

To bring about a world that we want we need to work first on ourselves — our inner selves. As a teacher of meditation, Maharishi promoted his technique of Transcendental Meditation (or TM). But, of course, these days there are many ways working on one’s inner self to expand our love and happiness. Because we are connected to everyone and everything else, the more love and happiness we can generate within ourselves, the more we will share it and see it the world around us.

So “Be simple; be kind; stay rested”. This will give you the strength and resilience to weather the coming challenges as the planet transitions into a new world that we have always dreamed of.
