The Magic You Are Looking For is in The Work You Are Avoiding
Facing your fears to find your calling
We’ve all avoided certain work or projects that make us uncomfortable or anxious. Public speaking, asking for a raise, writing that book — we come up with countless excuses to avoid stepping outside our comfort zone.
However, the quote “The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding” contains an important truth: often, the very work, calling, or opportunity we dread may lead us to our greatest fulfillment.
When we avoid risk, we hinder our growth. Every time we face a fear, push past self-doubt, or tackle an unfamiliar challenge, we build courage and resilience. Bit by bit, we chip away at the barriers that hold us back until finally we break through.
We unlock new talents, deepen self-knowledge, and expand our horizons. We begin the hero’s journey — departing the familiar to bring back rare gifts that benefit our communities.
Consider a few inspiring examples of people who confronted their fears head-on: the anxious youth who becomes an empowering public speaker, the closeted poet who publishes vulnerable verse, and the salesperson terrified of asking for promotions who learn to advocate for their worth.
In each case, avoiding the intimidating work would have deprived them and others of their greatest contributions. Their magic came not from staying safe, but from courageously engaging.
When we wonder why we haven’t found our calling, our genius, our joy, often it’s because we instinctively avoid the very stretch opportunities that would lead us there. If we can be compassionate yet unrelenting with ourselves — coaxing our first clumsy steps past paralyzing doubt and insecurity — we will be astonished at the doors that open.
The enchantment lies beyond our reluctance patiently awaiting our embrace. We simply need to muster the courage to leap forward.
