Your Core Potions Three

Let’s Start with the Spellbreaking and Shielding Potions of Witch Camp

The 3 Core Potions are sometimes known as the 3 Witches (image by the author with the help of an unknown artist)

As a practicing magical creature, it is helpful to have three core potions in your witch’s bag of tricks and treats. There are three main energetic actions that you can take to build a solid foundation of roots under your magic wings.

These potions include a:

  • Spellbreaking Potion
  • Shielding Potion
  • Attracting Potion

The Spellbreaking Potion

The first core potion is important for entering into the invisible realms of magic. Over the course of our day, we are surrounded by spellcasters. These powerful witches and wizards have put their spells out into the world.

Some of them are beneficial (kind, loving words, and actions), some neutral (gossipy news reporting for example), others deliberately or unconsciously malevolent. (I’m looking at you, marketers of harmful products.)

Good, bad, or in between, you are still under a spell. There are many many spells cast throughout your day. You return home with a cloud of spells surrounding you. To practice your unique brand of magic — the goal of all the Witch Types, even traditionalists — it is important that you clean these spells off before you begin. (You can discover your Witch Type here.)

This is where a Spellbreaking Potion comes in handy.

Potions are equal parts magical infused ingredients, the ability to follow along with a recipe, and your own unique brand of witchery. You always add something of yourself to your magic. This uniqueness is your own invisible spirit, mind, and heart.

Your Youness exists inside of you, and it is your magical task to bring it out into the world for others to get to experience. I can promise you that the world will miss your magic if you don’t share it.

Thus we stir up a batch of Spellbreaking Potion so we can show up to our magical work without all the spells of others clouding our light.

Stepping outside of the spell of the ordinary world is an important action for anyone who has magic to share (and if you are reading these words that means you. Whether it is through your words, your art, your creative doings… you have magic that matters to the world story.)

So upon returning home from your day out in the world, be sure to take a moment to clean off the spells that have bombarded you. I keep a bottle of Spellbreaking Potion at my door (which I have also used liberally on the doorway itself) so I can easily clean up when I come home.

(The Hawaiian tradition of taking your shoes off before entering your home is another example of leaving the outside world behind. Shoes are positively mired in spells.)

This doesn’t mean a rejection of your worldly life, it just is a cleaning up and consolidating of your own unique powers. Because you will do more good in the world as You in your own power than as someone surrounded and influenced by the spells — even the well-meaning ones — of the ordinary world.

Witch Camp Spellbreaking Potion Recipe

This potion is used to clear a person or room of any negative influences.

  • 1 cup Moon Milk (place a jar of water under the light of the moon*)
  • 1 tsp Minxmint (also known as mint)
  • 1/4 tsp Nightblooming Apple (also known as chamomile)
  • 1/2 tsp Flowering Wolfbalm (also known as lavender)
  • Juice and Zest of one Lemon

Potion Art: DECANTATION

Magical Instructions

  • Steep the Minxmint & Nightblooming Apple in 1 cup hot Moon Milk for 30 minutes.
  • Once cool, strain out herbs & combine with lemon.
  • Decant into a mister bottle. Liberally spritz yourself to clear any spells.
  • Especially beneficial to mist your room before bedtime.

To turn into a drinkable potion after an especially spellcasted day: Stir in a teaspoon of Sun Sap (also known as maple syrup.) Tree saps, pine needles, fruits, and nuts are concentrated sources of sunlight.

Once we have cleaned up it is time to work our magic whatever it may be. Perhaps it is to make a Shielding Potion.

The Shielding Potion

As you likely have imagined, the Shielding Potion is what we put on before we head out the door into the ordinary world.

Here is the thing to remember. The world is primarily a benevolent place. Most dark spellcasting is unconscious, many times spells go awry because a Witch or Wizard wasn’t trained how to properly use their magic. Our school systems rarely teach real magic beyond reading, writing, and sacred math.

So this is why we have these core potions. The Shielding Potion is just a little strengthening spell for our orbit, sometimes known as our aura, the invisible energy that surrounds all living things, even the earth.

I think of it like a magical Witch’s vitamin. This is why I often make it into an edible potion that I take with my ordinary multivitamin in the morning.

Witch Camp Shielding Potion Recipe

1/2 tsp each of these magical herbs:

  • DragonsBlood (you can substitute basil)
  • Memory Caster (you can use rosemary)
  • Minxmint (garden mint is a common substitute)
  • Zest of one Orange
  • 1/2 cup Moon Milk
  • 1 cup Coconut oil

Potion Art: REDUCTION

Magical Instructions:

  • Simmer the herbs & zest in 1/ 2 cup hot moon milk* until it reduces down by half. Allow to cool, then strain out herbs. Slowly stir* into the coconut oil. A drop or two of Orange Flavor or Essential Oil will make this potion even more potent. Decant into a jar with a snug-fitting lid.
  • Massage this potion into your skin whenever you feel the need for extra protection.

A Shield for Dark Magic

This Potion is used to defend and protect from Dark Magic. Dark Magic is negative and critical thoughts and words. Most Magic isn’t deliberately dark. Most negativity comes our way unconsciously. Some people get into habits of being critical or angry and leak this energy onto us. This Potion can help.

All of your core potions can be adapted to your best uses. But do consider keeping a batch of Spellbreaking and Shielding Potion by your front door. Exit and enter your home with your magic swirling around you like a fabulous cloak. Your magic is here to express your unique Youness. You can use it to enchant your most magical life and world.

We will talk about our Attracting Potions in another post altogether.

*Moon and Stirring Magics

  • New, Waxing and Full Moon are beginning, building, and attracting energies. Waning and Dark Moon are banishing, unwinding, and reducing energies.
  • Stir your potions in a clockwise way if they’re building energy and in a counter-clockwise way if the altar is meant to unwind an energy or situation.
