Summary

The website content presents a personal reflection on the experience of dealing with cancer through a poem titled "Magic 8 Ball," accompanied by a photograph and a related link to another poem about aging.

Abstract

The poem "Magic 8 Ball" is a poignant piece that captures the emotional journey of someone grappling with a cancer diagnosis. It begins with the stark reality of a cancer scare, leading to an emergency room visit and the unsettling news of a tumor's discovery. The poem uses the metaphor of an 8 ball to describe the tumor's size and the uncertainty it brings, much like the unpredictability of the divination toy. The author vividly describes the physical scar left by surgery, which mirrors the doctor's nonchalant gesture as he reassures the patient that the cancer likely hasn't spread. The accompanying image by Pau Casals on Unsplash adds a visual depth to the narrative, while a linked poem titled "Midlife Crisis" offers further exploration into themes of aging and self-acceptance.

Opinions

  • The author conveys a sense of surrealism and dark humor in the face of a life-altering diagnosis, using the Magic 8 Ball as a metaphor for the unpredictability of cancer.
  • There is an underlying tension between the clinical detachment of the medical professional and the patient's profound emotional experience, highlighted by the doctor's casual drawing of the 8 ball in the air.
  • The scar is personified, symbolizing the permanent mark of the cancer experience and the doctor's role in the author's journey, as it resembles "the line of the doctor’s mouth."
  • The poem suggests a mix of hope and uncertainty, as the doctor's optimistic prognosis is tempered by the tentative nature of his delivery, indicated by his absent-minded handling of the imaginary 8 ball.
  • The link to the poem "Midlife Crisis" implies a connection between the cancer experience and broader existential themes of aging and self-acceptance, suggesting that the website content is part of a larger narrative or thematic exploration.

Magic 8 Ball

A poem about cancer, come and gone

They’ll give you a scar to remember your cancer scare: afternoon and evening in the ER, then the doctor’s blank look as he draws an 8 ball in the air to describe the size of your tumor, how it blots out your ovary on the CT like a sinister sun.

The scar has the shape of the line of the doctor’s mouth, almost turned up at the ends when he says the cancer probably hasn’t spread, his palms absently cupping the imaginary 8 ball as though he might keep it from rolling away.
