Mexico May Have a Female President

Have You Heard the Name Claudia Sheinbaum — If Not, You Will

Mexico’s Flag, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico — Author’s Photo

Mexico seems set to elect its first female president in next year’s election after the country’s leading parties both unveiled women candidates. CNN

Women couldn’t even vote until 1950 in Mexico, and many a President of our good neighbor to the South were powerful men often seen as macho.

But in nine months, Mexico could have the first female President.

And while macho may not describe her, another “M” word does — “Magnificent.”

I like everything about Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo. And so do my fellow Americans living near the border in San Diego.

Sheinbaum received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

“A freaking Nobel Peace Prize, folks, for Climate Change.” Mike Rhodes

Why do so many San Diego residents love her?

Because of the pollution and sewage dumped into the Pacific Ocean by the billions of gallons each year from the Tijuana River along with plastic and other trash.

An issue that past Mexican presidents and American Presidents have failed to address over several decades.

Myself and my local residents are hopeful that if she becomes President, action to address this horrible environmental disaster will finally become a priority.

And perhaps the “No Swimming” signs at Imperial and Coronado beaches can be removed.

She is an amazing person.

She was listed in 2018 as one of the BBCs 100 top women in the world.

Not just Mexico — The World.

Sheinbaum has been serving as the Mayor of Mexico City, a position equivalent to a State Governor here. She has served in this role since 2018 and recently resigned to run for President.

She was elected as the candidate of the leftist Juntos Haremos Historia coalition. She is the first woman and first Jewish person to be elected to this position.

She also has a lot of courage and guts, taking on organized crime and criminal political activities when few were willing to do so.

While Claudia Sheinbaum will be running in the 2024 general election, she is not the only woman — Senator Xóchitl Gálvez, was nominated by the opposition coalition.

Both of these women are polling well, and it certainly looks like Mexico will have a woman President.

They want to replace the current leader Andrés Manuel López Obrador, since Mexican law prohibits presidents from seeking a second six-year term.

He has clashed with some feminists who view him as out of touch. Yet his government and Congress have also seen record female participation in a country where ‘machista’ culture has long been blamed for relegating women to subordinate roles and higher levels of violence against them than in regional peers. I wish her all the luck in the world.

Keep an eye out; I suspect you will see her name in the future, even if you don’t know who she is today.
