Macau (Macao) — Templo de A-Má 媽閣廟, Macau (Macao)
Exploring the Templo de A-Má 媽閣廟 (A-Ma Temple)
September 2016
I do like visiting churches and temples on my travels. So it was great to spend some time exploring Templo de A-Má (A-Ma Temple) 媽閣廟 in Macau (Macao).
A-Ma, also called Tin Hou (Heavenly Empress), is the Goddess of Seafarers, and the Templo de A-Má 媽閣廟 (A-Ma Temple) predates the city of Macao.
The temple is on the western slope of Barra Hill. It consists of the Gate Pavilion, the Memorial Arch, the Prayer Hall, the Hall of Benevolence, the Hall of Guanyin and the Buddhist Pavilion Zhengjiao Chanlin.
The temple has been through a series of renovations and rebuilds, and the current layout of the temple dates from 1828.
The oldest part of the temple is the Hall of Benevolence from 1488, with the Prayer Hall (The First Palace of the Holy Mountain) dating from 1605.
Some big incense coils. I saw something similar in the Man Mo Temple 文武廟 in Hong Kong.
I enjoyed my visit to the Templo de A-Má (A-Ma Temple) 媽閣廟. It was great to wander around looking at the architecture. Not only that, but I liked watching the people worship, and I found the smell of burning incense wafting across the temple complex delightful.
