Macau (Macao) — Fortaleza da Guia 東望洋炮台 (松山炮台), Macau (Macao)

Another day, another fort

September 2016

Having visited Fortaleza do Monte 大炮台, I thought it was only fair I had a look at Fortaleza da Guia 東望洋炮台 (松山炮台).

Like Fortaleza do Monte 大炮台, Fortaleza da Guia 東望洋炮台 (松山炮台) was built between 1622 and 1638 to defend Macau (Macao). Fortaleza da Guia 東望洋炮台 (松山炮台) also helped repel the Dutch invasion of 1622.

The Guia Chapel (1622) and Guia Lighthouse (1865) are inside the fort. The Guia Lighthouse was the first modern lighthouse on China’s coast and is still in use.

The views of Macau (Macao) from Fortaleza da Guia 東望洋炮台 (松山炮台) are great.

The Guia Chapel is dedicated to Our Lady of Guia (“Guia” means “Guidance” in Portuguese). I was very impressed with the inside of the chapel, as it contained some very old frescos uncovered during restoration work in 1996. The frescos consisted of plant and architectural column motifs, with the images drawn as mainly black lines with some orange colouring. There were also images on the ceiling. An information board said the frescos contained Western and Chinese themes. Unfortunately, I wasn’t allowed to take photographs in the chapel (why?), so you must take my word for it.

Two gravestones were on the floor inside the door from 1687 to 1729.

As I left Fortaleza da Guia 東望洋炮台 (松山炮台), I came across this hedge.

I enjoyed my visit to the 17th-century Fortaleza da Guia 東望洋炮台 (松山炮台). The fort had great views of Macau (Macao) and a fascinating history. The chapel was impressive, and it was great to visit something so old. Climbing the lighthouse was worth the effort as I got some spectacular views of Macau (Macao).
