Macau (Macao) — Capitania dos Portos (Port Authority) 港務局 and the Moorish Barracks, Macau (Macao)

This one had me confused…

September 2016

I continued exploring Macau (Macao) and visited the Capitania dos Portos (Port Authority) 港務局, or it might have been the Moorish Barracks. It turned out to be both.

An informative board nearby told me about the Moorish Barracks. The Barracks were built in 1874 for an Indian regiment from Goa appointed to reinforce Macao’s police force.

The connection between Macau (Macao) and Goa dates back to them being ‘sister cities’ on the old Portuguese maritime routes.

Since 1905, the building has been the headquarters of the Harbour Authority. So, the Moorish Barracks became the Capitania dos Portos or Port Authority. Confusion solved.

Anyway, for a Port Authority building, they were pretty stunning. I loved the colours and the arches. What a fantastic-looking building for a barracks. Sadly, I couldn’t go in as it is a working building, that is, it is the Port Authority.
