M2L Mediterranean Machine Learning Summer School 2023 in Thessaloniki, Greece 🤖📚🌅🌊 | Quick recap

Last summer I had the amazing opportunity to attend the M2L Mediterranean Machine Learning Summer School 2023 in Thessaloniki, Greece 🤖📚🌅🌊
The event was a delightful blend of talks, tutorials, poster sessions, and panel discussions, all put nicely together. Some highlights:
• Yuge (Jimmy) Shi’s deep dive into Computer Vision was very enlightening. Moving from the basics of image classification to the game-changing Unified-IO, she painted a vivid picture of the rapid evolution of visual perception in machines. 📸
• Sahand Sharifzadeh took us on a mesmerizing journey through Transformers. With special emphasis on the Flamingo model, he made us rethink and reimagine the capabilities of these architectures. 💡
• Konstantina Palla effortlessly bridged the worlds of AI and art. The idea that AI can democratize art, giving voice and canvas to many more around the world, felt profoundly impactful. 🎨
• Maria Liakata’s delve into Natural Language Processing was particularly captivating. She beautifully illustrated how time-sensitive sensing of language plays a critical role, especially in understanding behavioral changes over time. The applications in mental health are not just intriguing but deeply significant. 📖
• Yannis Assael had a different story to tell — predicting the past with deep neural networks. His innovative approach to using AI to date ancient texts, ones that are beyond traditional carbon dating, was a testament to the incredible versatility of AI. And who wouldn’t love the idea of teaching ancient Greek to kids using AI? Time travel, 2023 style! ⌛️ Perfect talk for an AI Mediterranean summer school
• And when Iulia Duta Duță merged two of my favorite realms: math and ML, I felt like a student all over again, eager to dive deeper into Graph Neural Networks. 🔢
But it wasn’t all just talks and tutorials. The panel discussion gave a fresh perspective on how AI is reshaping the Mediterranean landscape. I especially resonated with Konstantinos Kyranakis’s vision for integrating AI into Greek education.
Of course, no summer school in the Mediterranean is complete without a cultural immersion. The dinner at Maiami? Amazing! Traditional Greek cuisine, waterfront sunset views, and energetic dance lessons made it an unforgettable evening. 💃🍽️
To sum it up, this summer school was a testament to the vibrant AI community and the rich Mediterranean heritage. Thank you so much to the organizers for this fantastic creating this experience! Here’s to more such enriching experiences! 🥂
