“It’s not what it looks like?” Tony stood up abruptly from his seat and cast a nervous glance at Nikki. His eyes darted between her and the news anchor on the TV screen that had just mentioned her possible murder.

“Did you kidnap her?” He asked in a serious tone. His eyes quickly flicked to his cell phone that was just out of arms reach.

“No,” Jessica insisted.

“Then care to explain what the fuck that was?” he pointed at the TV and growled.

“I don’t know… There were cops coming and we were trying to hide,” Jessica began to explain.

“So the cops are after you!” he accused.

“No! I mean, yes,” Jessica stumbled over her words. “I’m trying to figure it out. We’ll leave just please, don’t call the cops.”

Tony quickly lunged for his phone and Jessica dove to stop him. Her body collided with his which caused the phone to skid across the floor while Tony crashed into the cabinets. The back of his head smacked the countertop during his fall to the floor.

Nikki awoke with a start and leaped up from the couch. “What’s going on?”

Jessica stared down at Tony’s limp body and the growing pool of blood from the back of his head. “Oh no…”

“Oh no?” Nikki asked and rushed over. “What do you mean oh-” she stopped herself short upon seeing Tony’s body, “-no. Jessica, what did you do?”

“I didn’t mean to hurt him,” she said panicked. Jessica knelt next to Tony and shook his body in a desperate attempt to wake him. “He was going to call the cops on us.”

“What?” Nikki gasped. She glared at Tony and, for a moment, was conflicted about the situation. “Damn narc… Is- Is he dead?”

“I don’t know,” Jessica laid her head on his chest and listened for a heartbeat.

She focused on the quiet rhythmic thump of his heart, but there was something more. Her eyes stared at his peaceful face and she could sense his being. It was like a lustful scent that drew her in. A sensation that captivated her attention and dominated her senses. She could feel it calling out to her, like an anthem of his body and mind.

She could feel his soul and it was ripe for the taking.

She felt compelled to move closer to Tony’s face. Her lips hovered over his with nothing more than a breath to separate them. She heard Nikki’s voice call out but her words were lost.

Tony’s soul, the essence of his being slipped through his lips and danced through the air for a moment. Jessica closed her eyes and inhaled deeply consuming the soul. Feelings of euphoria and satisfaction flooded her body and, for a moment, she felt on top of the world.

“What the heck was that?” Nikki’s voice tore her back to reality.

“I- I don’t know,” Jessica stammered. She pushed herself away from Tony as a quiet sigh escaped his lips. His head rolled to the side in the pool of blood that had formed.

“It looked like you were trying to make out with him,” she judged.

“I didn’t kiss him!” Jessica argued.

“Either way, he’s alive,” Nikki said. “If he was willing to rat us out to the cops before he definitely will when he wakes up. We need to leave.”

“Well, we can’t just leave him like this,” Jessica gestured to Tony. “He probably has a concussion or something.”

“Then what are you suggesting? Call 911 and wait for them to show up and arrest us?”

“We’ll call and dash,” Jessica suggested.

“And go where? We’re running out of places to hide,” Nikki said with an exhausted sigh.

“I’ll think of something. Hand me his phone,” she pointed to the device.

“For both our sakes, I hope so,” Nikki complied.

With the authorities notified, Nikki and Jessica decided to borrow some food and supplies from Tony’s pantry. They decided someday they would pay him back for his forced hospitality. For now, the duo slipped out the back door under the cover of darkness.

Together they walked down the road. The angry wail of sirens was far behind them but it still managed to rattle their nerves. Jessica kept her head low and stared at her feet while they walked aimlessly through the city.
