Love the Skin You’re In

Your uniqueness is the key

She enters a state of introspection, studying, Deciphering exactly who she was just yesterday, Noticing the growth, the change of who she was yesteryear, Determining whether an improvement was garnered; betterment I guess you’d say.

She studies the minute flaws of her expression, Diagnosing every discrepancy in her past complexion, Dissecting personality traits meandering from a previous version, Taking note of the lack of perfection.

She ponders that idea with great intensity, Wondering if she finds fault in her slight imperfections, Do they make or break her? She seriously questions, Who would she be without her defections?

There are some flaws she detests, But are they enough to insist on change? She queries who’d she become if she discarded the worst of herself, Feeling she’d be someone else, or at the very least, herself estranged.

Those weird intrinsic flaws mould her inherent being, Portraying her uniqueness in all her glory, So with that in mind, she fell in love, With every flaw, error, discrepancy; warts and all — knowing they formed part of her story.

She is who she is! Uniqueness is the ultimate key, She loves the skin she’s in, And that love is what sets her free.

Every dimple, scar and anomaly is perfectly imperfect, The essence of her absolutely authentic self, She is who she is, And admits she’s not one size fits all, or, your general off-the-shelf!

This poem was written in response to a prompt from Lodestar Gazette. The prompt I chose to run with is as follows :

In a world where genetic editing is commonplace, pondering any imperfections. Would you edit your past self, or is there beauty in our inherited flaws?
