Love Looks Like This When My Brother Writes
Michael Butler, sports, and family
I’ve been a big fan of Michael L Butler before he joined Medium.
That’s because he’s my brother. I’ve known him for 53 years and read lots of poetry and newspaper stories as a former sportswriter.
My brother has published 14 stories in his first month on Medium, and he has a flair for storytelling about events from his childhood.
A family writer
He has written narrative poetry for every member of his family, three sons and daughter, and poems about me, my mom and dad, and we like to share our poetry with wine coolers and cheese at my moms.
So you can expect to see narrative stories looking back nostalgically on past events growing up in New York, Kentucky, South Dakota, and California.
A sports writer with a side of …
His specialty is sports stories. But if your not a big sports fan, his stories combine sports with a family, friendship or travel and I find they are more than just about sports like in his story about boxing Muhammed Ali:
Another one my favorite of his stories is when he and a buddy snuck into to see the last second in a historic moment in an NBA playoff game. Again, this is more of a buddy and adventure story of seizing the moment to do something.
What I like about his stories is he gives you the details that help you to see and feel what is happening in the story, but they have a tight structure to give you just the main plot elements necessary to tell the story in a five-minute frame.
Anxiety and farts
His stories have funny moments like the one he just dropped (as I’m writing this story) on a talent I had as kid that got him in trouble with our dad:
But besides writing about my farts … he can go in-depth by writing about how he responded to our dad’s death by writing about his struggles with anxiety:
